Chapter 6
Privacy and the Government
Privacy and the Government
In Comedy, Bo Burnham is analyzing the relationship that he has with the wrongs of world as a white man. He talks about wanting to leave the world better than he found it and he is debating if comedy is a helpful way for him to use his white privilege to change the world.
6:00 “The world is so f---ed up. Systematic Oppression, Income Inequality….the other stuff. And there’s only one things I can do about it… while.., while being paid and at the center of attention.”
In "How the World Works", he once again critiques the inequities of the world, referencing the role that our government played in upholding inequality, specifically referencing the FBI’s persecution of civil rights activist Martin Luther King.
16:08 “The simple narrative taught in every history class is demonstrably false and pedagogically classist. Don’t you know the world is built with blood and genocide and exploitation! The global network of capital essentially functions to separate the worker from the means of production and the FBI killed Martin Luther King! Private property is inherently theft and neoliberal facists are destroying the left and every politician every cop on the street protects the interests of the pedophilic corporate elite! That is how the world works…that is how the world works..”
In "Welcome to the Internet", Bo Burnham transitions from just critiquing the governments role in injustice, to also referencing the idea that the government might be actively watching your online activity/
“There no need to panic, this isn’t a test, just nod or shake your head and we’ll do the rest.”
He then goes onto describe some of the illegal activity that occurs on the internet such as beheadings, hit-men for hire, and advice on how to build bombs.
He also pulls in the role that the internet plays in allowing people to discuss and debate the intentions of the government specifically through conspiracy theories “Obama sent the immigrants to vaccinate your kids.”
