About Me

Hello! My name is Inseung Kang. I'm an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon University and I direct the MetaMobility Lab. In our lab, we largely work on developing wearable robotic systems, such as robotic exoskeletons, that can augment human mobility during dynamic movement.

Prior to joining CMU, I was a postdoctoral associate in the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences at MIT working on developing predictive models of human movement and understanding how humans adapt to new locomotor tasks. Particularly, I'm using reinforcement learning, dynamics, and control to tackle this problem. I completely my BS, MS, and PhD in mechanical engineering from Georgia Tech, where I worked on developing robotic hip exoskeletons with deep learning-based control frameworks to enhance mobility for stroke patients.

My research program is fairly diverse, ranging from designing versatile mechatronic platforms to developing robust AI-based models for detecting user's intent during movement. In general, my work revolves around better understandings of human movement and designing wearable systems that enable improved human mobility. My long-term research goal is to develop wearable interventions that are of good value to people with limited mobility.

I am actively looking to build a collaborative team of motivated individuals interested in working on enhancing human mobility using Robotics, Deep Learning, Wearables, Biomechanics, Control, and Motor Learning.
