Results:  Twenty seven studies were identified that evaluated various energy healing interventions involving 3159 participants. Thirteen of the energy healing trials generated statistically significant outcomes.

Conclusions:  Energy healing has demonstrated some improvement in illness symptoms, however high level evidence consistently demonstrating efficacy is lacking. Further more robust trials are required to better understand which elements of energy healing interventions are associated with positive outcomes.

The practice of energy healing has been around for centuries in cultures all over the world and has recently been picking up steam in the United States. Advocates for energy healing claim it comes with numerous health benefits, including reduced pain, improved depression and anxiety symptoms, and an overall sense of well-being.

Energy healing is a complementary approach based on the belief that our bodies have energy flowing through them, and that healing can come from helping to balance this flow, per the National Cancer Institute (NCI).

In both TCM and ayurveda, the goal is to support the body to achieve balance and realign your energy to find healing. This is done with a number of tools, such as massage therapy, acupuncture, and movement therapies like yoga and tai chi.

There's no scientific consensus about how energy healing therapies work. Energy healing encompasses a variety of techniques believed to clear blockages in the energy field that contribute to imbalance in a person's life, says Kristen Blythe, a reiki master teacher from the greater Boston area with training in more than a dozen energy healing modalities from around the world.

Qigong is an ancient traditional Chinese practice involving breathing exercises and movement that aims to optimize energy within the body, mind, and spirit in order to maintain health and well-being, according to the NCCIH.

Acupuncture is often included in energy healing topics, but it has significantly more research and evidence to support its use for pain and various other conditions, including clinical studies and experimental research on its mechanisms. This sets it slightly apart from other forms of energy healing in a biomedical context. You can learn more from the NCCIH about the broad research studies on acupuncture over the years.

Scientific research on the health benefits of energy healing is lacking; the field needs more rigorous studies to determine efficacy. Some data suggests some forms of energy healing, including reiki, acupuncture, qigong, and reflexology may come with several health benefits, such as pain relief, improved depression and anxiety, and enhanced overall well-being.

A major benefit of energy healing touted by practitioners is pain relief, and there is some scientific backing for that claim. A review of studies, published in Current Rheumatology Reports in November 2019, on qigong for musculoskeletal pain found that a consistent qigong practice soothed pain in varying degrees among adults with different forms of chronic pain, and with few side effects.

Energy healing may improve mood and even help with symptoms of depression and anxiety. A 2017 review of 13 studies determined reiki was more effective than a placebo at reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety, as well as improving overall quality of life. A more recent review, published in November 2021, of 10 studies involving more than 1,200 adolescents determined that qigong was effective at reducing depression and anxiety among teens.

Energy healing is currently being studied in patients who receive cancer therapy to find out if it can improve quality of life, boost the immune system, or reduce side effects, according to the NCCIH. Some forms of energy healing have been shown to have some benefits to cancer patients.

Energy healing is a complementary therapeutic approach that has roots in ancient and traditional medicine. Scientific research is currently ongoing to determine how useful these therapies are, but early evidence suggests that certain forms of energy healing and practices (reiki and qigong) may help with pain, depression, anxiety, and overall well-being.

This paper surveys the landscape of energy healing, offering a taxonomy and conceptual overview of the work of practitioners. First, systems of energy healing are classified under four categories: an East Asian tradition, a Western professional tradition, a bioenergy tradition, and a contemporary metaphysical tradition. Examples of each are provided. Second, the possibility of core concepts in energy healing is broached, focusing specifically on five issues: the source of healing and its pathway of transmission, what it is that is being transmitted, what it is that healers do, the healer's state of consciousness, and requirements of clients in order to receive healing. Third, a discussion is provided of the relative importance of technique in energy healing. Fourth, what really matters for healing is proposed, emphasizing three factors: focus, intention, and compassion. Finally, the paper concludes by suggesting that formally trained energy practitioners do not have a monopoly on energy healing.

Thus, subtle energy is another term used along with Energy Medicine. Here the energies activating a person are subtle or of very low intensity. Such low levels may not be measurable at this time. This statement implies that the energies we are talking about are of a physical kind. There are four basic types of energies enumerated in Physics; they are strong and weak forces at the nuclear level, gravitational, and electromagnetic forces. Of these, electromagnetic (or, its equivalent, acoustic) is the only one that is easily manipulated at the present time. Acoustic energy could be transformed into electromagnetic or vice versa through a material property known as piezoelectricity. Many tissues of the body are known to be piezoelectric; hence, any electromagnetic input to the body is transformed into acoustic and any acoustic input could be transformed into electromagnetic energy. Thus, the body is bathed in both electromagnetic and acoustic energies of various frequencies and intensities.[1,2]

There is yet another notion of subtle energy; that is, the energy may not be a physical one. This statement raises many questions: if not physical, what is it? Can it be measured? Is there a physical manifestation of the non-physical energy? Take for example, prayer or non-contact therapeutic touch. In these examples, there is no measurable physical energy that seems to be taking part in the interactions. Although the effects of prayer and therapeutic touch are well-investigated and reported, the energy type and hence the mechanism of action can only be surmised. The energy of chi (or, qi) or prana is not measurable; however, the interaction of chi or prana with the biological system may be deduced. For example, with the appropriate flow of prana, the tissues are healthy; thus, chi gong or yoga may be thought of as stabilizing the flow of prana in the body.

The question arises if subtle energies could at all be measured. Direct measurement of subtle energies is not possible at present as the physical / psychological / spiritual aspects of these energies are not clearly understood in modern terminology. However, indirect measurement of subtle energy in the body is possible through certain physiological correlates that are emerging. Instruments to measure acupuncture activity and electrical discharge photography popularly known as Kirlian photography are the two main contenders for subtle energy monitoring. Acupuncture instruments are based on the observation that acupuncture points have special electrical characteristics; the points have lower resistance to electrical current flow as compared to the surrounding tissues. As each meridian is associated with one or more organs inside the body, the electrical activity of the acupoint seems to be related to the organ function.

Energy healing is based on the belief that a vital energy flows through the body. The goal is to balance the energy flow in the patient. There's not enough evidence to support the existence of energy fields. However, there are no harmful effects in using these approaches. Some examples are

The philosophy is that certain points in your body (called meridians in Chinese medicine) correspond to different physical and emotional parts of you. And when energy can flow freely to these points and throughout your system, it positively impacts your physical body and your emotions, says Karelas.

On my way home, I was so, so tired. I felt like I took a Benadryl. I texted Karelas who said this is common and means my body is in that sweet rest and digest mode, which is a great sign of potential healing to come.

Energy Healing operates on the premise that the human energy field is deeply intertwined with physical, emotional, and spiritual health. Our bodies are energetic systems, with our heart, brain, and nervous system using energy for function.

At HealingSpace, our practice is rooted in EnergyTouch advanced healing. This method extends beyond the primary seven chakras and considers the energy field encompassing our entire body. Our trained Healing Practitioners target blockages and enhance natural energy pathways, letting the body self-heal.

Energy Healing acknowledges that the human energy field is a dynamic system intimately linked to our physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. It's an undeniable fact that our body is energized and powered by intricate energy systems - our heart rhythmically pulsates with energy, and our brain, along with the nervous system, orchestrates this energy throughout our entire body. This energy field continuously adapts to the myriad physical, emotional, and spiritual demands of our being. 589ccfa754
