FERPA, or the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, is a U.S. federal law enacted in 1974 that protects the privacy of student education records. It gives students certain rights regarding their education records, including:
Right to Access: Students (or their parents if under 18) have the right to inspect and review their educational records maintained by the school.
Right to Request Correction: If a student believes their records contain inaccuracies or violations of their privacy, they can request amendments.
Right to Control Disclosure: Schools must have written permission from the student or parent before disclosing personally identifiable information from a student's records, with certain exceptions (e.g., disclosure to school officials, financial aid, or in health and safety emergencies).
Right to File Complaints: Students can file complaints with the Department of Education if they believe their rights have been violated.
FERPA applies to all schools that receive funds under applicable programs of the U.S. Department of Education, ensuring that educational institutions handle students' personal information with care.
