Founded in 1938, the Centre Psychiatrique Saint-Bernard, (hereafter CPSB) - located in Manage, Hainaut, is part of the ASBL Oeuvres des Frères de la Charité.
The CPSB accommodates about 300 adults with psychological difficulties, mental disability, or mental illness in the 8 Care Units of its hospital. It is also a House of Psychiatric Care (MSP) that offers a residential approved accommodation for people with stabilized chronic mental illness. Each Care Unit and place of life represent a place that is welcoming, secure, and respectful of the needs, rights, and experience of the person. The St-Bernard Psychiatric Centre promotes respect for the dignity of everyone in an environment that is adaptable and accessible to civil society.
The non-formal education of patients related to their social inclusion and their relatives is also one of the most important concerns and activities of the hospital.
Since 1964, DCHE develops and produces health promotion material on many themes and many target groups, manly adults. Themes include child and maternity health, alcohol & tobacco problems, chronic conditions, mental health, infectious diseases etc,.
DCHE has worked extensively with patient empowerment during the last 10-15 years by gaining specific expertise in developing, implementing and evaluating patient education, where the trainers consist of health professionals as well as volunteers of non-health professionals. DCHE has been implementing the programs in almost all 98 municipalities and at several hospitals in Denmark – using a combination of research, events, engagement activities, and political analysis to also create European impetus – e.g. by the founding of ENOPE, the European Network on Patient Empowerment, leading the PiSCE project, participating in the PRO STEP project.
