This workshop offers a rigorous and timely recalibration of how innovation should be understood and practised. In an era where innovation has shifted from a competitive advantage to the defining engine of economic growth, standing still is no longer a neutral position.
Rather than defaulting to incremental improvements or imitative strategies, it challenges participants to engage with a more expansive, futures-driven perspective: one that recognises the accelerating pace, scale and interconnectedness of change across sectors.
The course situates innovation within a broader economic, technological and societal context. It highlights a central paradox: while innovation is widely celebrated, it is also often poorly executed, constrained by short-term thinking and an over reliance on outdated assumptions.
By introducing futures literacy and foresight methodologies, the workshop equips delegates to navigate uncertainty not as a threat, but as a strategic resource.
Participants will explore how breakthroughs increasingly emerge at the intersection of disciplines, and why organisations must move beyond present-forward logic to adopt a more resilient future-back approach. It naturally champions a series of relevant visionaries and trailblazers, whilst also addressing the macro context and framing of megatrends.
Crucially, the workshop emphasises that successful innovation is as much cultural as it is technical. It advocates for environments that reward curiosity, collaboration and adaptive thinking: qualities essential for thriving amid volatility.
With opportunities for debate, networking and cross-sector insight, the course provides not only conceptual clarity but practical frameworks for action.
For those seeking to remain relevant in an increasingly uncertain world, it offers inspiration.
The opening session establishes a macro-level understanding of innovation as a historical and economic force. It traces its evolution from past revolutionary activity to today’s intelligence-driven economy, highlighting how technological, geopolitical and societal dynamics intersect. Participants are encouraged to reassess familiar assumptions and recognise innovation as a systemic, rather than isolated, activity shaped by uncertainty and rapid change.
Building on this foundation, the second session introduces foresight as a practical discipline. Delegates explore tools for identifying weak signals, mapping alternative futures and uncovering friction & opportunity spaces. The emphasis is on shifting from reactive to proactive thinking, using future scenarios to inform present-day strategy and mitigate the risks of planning based solely on historical precedent.
The third session broadens the lens, examining how innovation manifests across industries. By analysing case studies and cross-sector patterns, participants identify transferable insights and common success factors. This comparative approach underscores the value of interdisciplinary thinking and challenges siloed perspectives that often limit organisational creativity.
Attention then turns inward, focusing on the cultural conditions required to sustain innovation. This session explores how leadership, incentives and organisational design influence the capacity to experiment and adapt. It argues that fostering a collaborative, inclusive and questioning environment is essential for translating ideas into impact.
The final session consolidates learning through reflection and synthesis. Participants co-create a forward-looking ‘Innovation Manifesto’ articulating principles and priorities tailored to their work context. The aim is to leave not only with insights, but with a clear, actionable commitment to embedding an ethos of ‘Using foresight to transform innovation’ in practice.
