Day 0 travel to Ferrol.
Getting ready to start camiño inglês. Travelled to Ferrol today: two hour drive to Santiago plus 1h30m by bus. It's 113km starting tomorrow, although I did 2 already today. Pilgrim office was closed. I had the credentials already and got shells from a Chinese shop. Staying at a nice hotel right in the city centre. I think it's my first time in Ferrol and although it's grey now, there are many beautiful houses and other remarkable buildings. Worth visiting. Tomorrow rain is predicted, and it's a long day, so I have to rest and get up relatively early. Will try and find a place where they serve food early, which us hard in Galicia 😆
Day 1 Ferrol to Pontedeume, 21,5 km
Quiet 5 hour walk, with nice views over the ria. Early start at dawn, with beautiful skies (port cranes leaving Ferrol in photo)...then nothing spectacular, but galician rural/industrial landscapes with no major climbs. Grey weather, always dry. Pontedeume, literally the bridge over river Eume, is a lovely historic town, with wonderful granite streets, with archways and some nice squares. Managed to find a good 11€ lunch menu and now it's nap time!!! It started to rain. Not heavy, good timing...
Day 2 Pontedeume to Betanzos, 21,2 km
Rain all night and rain all morning till 12 am. 7 pilgrims staying in the same small hotel last night. Today was hilly, and I feel the legs. I am out of shape after Christmas...My backpack, as usual, is heavy, with rain/winter clothes plus the camera! In the aternoon we passed lovely places, sea views, rural countryside with horses, cows, farmland...quiet, although there is always some noise from fast cars in the distance. Betanzos, where we are now, is beautiful. Granite small lanes, wonderful squares, and huge churches. In one we tried to get a stamp, but that was only possible if we paid a 2€ ticket to go in!! You must love the catholic church! Staying in a nice apartment now. Seems like one of those Aaron often books!! Waiting now for restaurants to open...there is a famous tortilla here!
Day 3 Betanzos to O Mesón do Vento, 25,1km
Lovely weather, even sunny at times! Walked most of the way with a t-shirt only 😀 tough enough walk. Felt tired most of the way. Long ascents although not very steep...almost 900 metres up in total. Nice countryside, fields, trees, donkeys, horses, dogs, cats, sheep, relaxing...too many eucalyptus and pine trees. Barely any services...after 10km cafe closed due to the flu, after 12km cafe closed due to Christmas season, finally after 17km, a nice cafe/restaurant. With a drink, a nice tapa of wild boar stew cooked in a creamy sauce...yummy. I should have had 3 drinks....staying in an apartment just off the Camino...2 bedroom but not as nice as yesterday, bit old and with strong smokers smell. Going to cook now and go to bed early...
Day 4 O Mesón do Vento to Sigüeiro, 25km.
Today was easier and landscapes were nicer. Best day so far. Day had 3 different parts. First, in the early morning there was fog and so many beautiful and mystical views (photos). Second, after 10am, the sun was shining, and we walked through galician rural landscapes at their best. Third, after 2pm approx., It started to rain, and it was just head down and walk to our destination. Staying at a nice place which is connected to one the albergues here. Apparently there is an open restaurant and we'll meet a few pilgrims there. Just over three hours to the end...it goes too fast!!
Day 5 Sigüeiro to Santiago de Compostela, 16,7km
The end 🤪🤪 back in Santiago, 4th time this year...2 with Ana!! 7 camiños in 2023...what's next? Today was quiet, some rain, some sun, beautiful oak forests, and obviously, when arriving, the industrial "poligono" ...no open cafes at all...I need to get fitter for 2024...last months were bad...work doesn't make me any good, I reckon...bom caminho!! Cheers
