2nd Grade students at Union Elementary in Montpelier, Vermont worked alongside 2nd grade students at the American United School of Kuwait. Students from both schools made self-portraits and collages of their bedrooms, in the hopes of learning about one another through the process of art making. Using Seesaw, an interactive social media style platform, 2nd graders uploaded their work to share with students in corresponding classes in Kuwait. Each student photographed or made a video of their artwork, along with commentary reflecting on their work. Once their own work was uploaded, they chose a work from their corresponding class in Kuwait to make a comment on.

In the 2016-2017 school year, AUS students from PreK to 10th grade collaborated with American artist Clark Stoeckly on a large scale digital collage that features student self-portraits. Mr. Stoeckly shared his artwork with middle and high school students who used his work as inspiration for designing their self-portraits. A large scale digital collage was created by Mr. Stoeckly using the self-portraits made by the students. Students learned how art can inspire social change, and how artists can be the ultimate Global Citizens.

The Columbus Museum, Columbus, GA - Teen Advisory Board
Throughout the 2015-2016 school year, AUS 8th and 9th grade Art students collaborated with the Columbus Museum’s teen advisory group on an international photo project that brought US and Kuwaiti students a better understanding of each other. As part of this collaboration, students interviewed each other via video messaging. Both groups of students selected questions that they responded to with photographs and an artist statement. Through the year, they shared photos and critiques of each other’s work building trusting relationships. This was an ongoing process in which the students were actively responsive, learned much about cultural awareness and created friendships from around the world. This project fulfilled the school's vision of creating global citizens.
