Aurora

Taken in Iceland, mid August 2017. We got really lucky with spectacular displays over two nights, each with distinctly different types of Aurora. The first night was fairly diffuse with minimal structure, the next night was a flowing river of green from one side of the sky to the other. Totally mesmerising and one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. Photos taken with my new 16-35mm lens on my 6D, so the 16mm gave a really huge and spectacular field of view of the sky! Some are a little under-exposed (I was more pre-occupied with watching them rather than concentrating on taking the photos!!), so you'll spot banding noise in some if you're a keen photo critique ;) Whilst I did my best at noise removal in post-processing, in some I didn't want to over do it, and left them in a more raw state as excessive noise removal either made them less realistic or ruined the feel of the shot. The astute amongst you may note that in low light our eyes are much less sensitive to colour, however these photos are of displays where the colours were as I saw them, and I have not been saturated in post-processing. I will note, however, that I did not see the blue colours until seeing the pictures! Overall I'm super pleased with these, I could stare at them forever!!
