Signavio workspace

As it was mentioned during the first lecture, we are going to use Signavio for most of the modelling activities, workshops, and organisation assignment. For this, each student received via email an invitation to the EAR2018 Signavio Workspace.

As soon as you get registered, you will be able to find the following folders in your workspace:

  • A main folder named “EAR2018”
  • A subfolder of EAR2018 named “TeamX”, where “X” is the number of your team. This is the folder that you are going to use for the workshops and organisation assignment (you will be able to see this folder tomorrow during the lecture when each team gets a folder).

If you have created your models for the GeneriCo assignment in other folder, please move the models to your “TeamX” folder.

Interview with the organisation

To process your interviews use the interview template, besides your own interview protocol.

Tips

Start with general information about the company: what kind of company is it, how big are they, where are they based, what are their products and services, and what is their mission and vision? Also ask for an organogram if available, this will help you build the organization structure view.

Try to quickly focus on the architecture, that is, the main business functions & processes, applications and their interactions. Depending on the company, this can take quite a while and need some explaining on your part, or the company may have full architectural documentation available you can use. The easiest is to go through all the views you need for your report together with the interviewee.

For the motivation analysis you have to ask critical questions about, for example, what the company's drivers and goals are, what the reasons are for the current solutions and why this solution was preferred over others. Use the list of critical questions in the argument lecture to guide the discussion. Try to ask these questions at the relevant step of the interview. So, for example, when discussing how the applications support the business processes or the services to the customer, ask whether they have considered other architectural possibilities (why? why not?). You can also ask the interviewee to come up with a recent change in architecture, and try to find the motivations behind the change.
