Audiovisual productions of five monasteries of Mount Athos: Agiou Pavlou, Karakalou, Pantokratoros, Stavronikita and Xenophontos.
The model for the work is an old one. A proskynetarion was a printed book that set out, in a convenient form, the history of a pilgrimage site, its objects of worship and its treasures — made for people who would travel, and equally for people who never would. It was a way of visiting by reading.
The digital version keeps that purpose and changes the means: it opens a window through which a user can tour the monasteries, and can discover and unfold their history interactively, across time as well as space.
The recording of each monastery documents its katholikon, its library, its kitchen, its cemetery, its workshops and the landscape around it — that is, both the spaces a visitor would be shown and the spaces that make the community work, which a visitor would not.
For Mount Athos this matters more than it would elsewhere. Access to the peninsula is restricted, and for half the population it is prohibited entirely. What the work produces is a form of access that does not require permission — and it inherits that ambition directly from the printed books it is named after.
HM Aghiou Pavlou
The audio and visual recordings included a list of points of St. Paul's HM, such as the monastery from a distance, the entrance portico, the arsana, the katholikon, the archontory, the inner courtyard of the complex in various directions, the general interior of the library, the library, the sacristy, the cemetery and the chapel, the kitchen, the kitchen signs and the bell tower, the chapel of the north wall etc.
HM Karakalou
The monastery administration was asked to record specific points, such as the monastery from a distance, the arsana, the entrance gallery, the katholikon outside, the inner courtyard of the complex in various directions, the archontariki, the interior of the katholikon, the cemetery and the chapel, the kitchen, the library, general view of the interior, the sacristy, the tablets and the bell tower, the jar from which the oil gushed, the the general interior of the Bank, the view from the walls to the sea, the chimney, the chapel, the chimneys, the oil well, the general interior of the Bank, the view from the walls to the sea, the etc.
HM Pantokratoros

The HM Xenophon proposed audio and visual coverage of the following points: The eve from a distance, the entrance gallery, the river, the new catholic, the main altar, the wooden roof of the mansion, the catholic, general shots and close-ups of the frescoes of Father Luke, the mosaic icons in the sanctuaries, the inner courtyard of the complex in different directions, the galley, the plaques and the bell tower, the interior of the chapel of St. Demetrios, the interior of the old catholic church, day and night with different lighting, the interior of the Bank, photos of relics, the view from the walls to the sea, Father Luke's icon workshop, the woodcarving workshop, etc. etc.
