These paths were, from the foundation of the monastic community until a few years ago, the main axis of communication between the monasteries — the physical network through which people, goods, letters and authority moved across the peninsula. Modern infrastructure has largely replaced them: roads laid over the old routes, and sealed irrigation systems where open water once ran beside them.
The project records four of these routes before the replacement is complete.
Xenophontos Monastery – Karyes, six kilometres, along a path destroyed where a highway was built over the original route to the administrative centre.
Karyes – Pantokratoros Monastery, 7.7 kilometres, passing through the Skete of Kapsala and the Skete of the Prophet Elias.
Vatopediou Monastery – Karakalou Monastery, the northern route, which connected Pantokratoros, Stavronikita and Iveron along its length.
New Skete – Simonos Petra Monastery, 12.5 kilometres, the southern route through several monasteries.
What the recordings are after is the contradiction of the landscape as it is met today by a walker or a pilgrim: a place where the human presence has been continuous for more than a thousand years, and where that presence has been simultaneously protective and destructive. The documentation registers both — what the monastic economy has preserved of the ecosystem, and what recent infrastructure has taken from it.
HM Xenophontos - Karyes
The trail starts from HM Xenophontos and ends at Karyes. The length of the total route is 6 km. The route started from HM Xenophontos heading towards HM Pantokratoros (Russian Monastery). From there it continued through the southern port of Daphne to HM Xiropotamou and ended in the capital of Mount Athos at Karyes. Unfortunately the path connecting HM Xiropotamou to the capital was destroyed for the most part, since it was replaced by the highway connecting the port of Dafnes with Karyes.
New Skete - HM Simonos Petra
The southern path had as its starting point Arsanas of New SketE in the direction of the settlement, then it led to HM Pavlos, HM Dionysiou, HM Osios Grigoriou and ended at the imposing monastery of Simonos Petra. The route is 12.5km long.
