The project concerned audio-visual recordings of selected paths of Mount Athos. The paths of Mount Athos were the main axis of communication between the monasteries from the foundation of Mount Athos until a few years ago. “Technological progress” led to their violent abandonment, to the degradation of the ecosystem that had developed for more than 1000 years. Along the way, walkers discover that large sections of routes have been replaced by the road network. Almost all the springs have been sealed and turned into a closed irrigation infrastructure for the rapidly expanding crops. Logging one economic activity that you have maintained for a thousand years does not seem to have adversely affected the biodiversity of the ecosystem. The absence of animal husbandry offers the place acomfortable survival of all species, resulting in a raging vegetation for all the routes of Mount Athos.
With the recordings, the main pursuit was not the aesthetic enjoyment but the transfer of the contradictory - many times - landscape of Mount Athos, as encountered today by walkers and pilgrims. The human presence is sometimes therapeutic and many times harmful for the Garden of Holy Mother as the monks call it. The project included the following routes: HM Xenophontos - Karyes, Karyes - HM Pantokratoros, HM Vatopediou - HM Karakalou, New Skete - HM Simonos Petra.
HM Xenophontos - Karyes
The trail starts from HM Xenophontos and ends at Karyes. The length of the total route is 6 km. The route started from HM Xenophontos heading towards HM Pantokratoros (Russian Monastery). From there it continued through the southern port of Daphne to HM Xiropotamou and ended in the capital of Mount Athos at Karyes. Unfortunately the path connecting HM Xiropotamou to the capital was destroyed for the most part, since it was replaced by the highway connecting the port of Dafnes with Karyes.
New Skete - HM Simonos Petra
The southern path had as its starting point Arsanas of New SketE in the direction of the settlement, then it led to HM Pavlos, HM Dionysiou, HM Osios Grigoriou and ended at the imposing monastery of Simonos Petra. The route is 12.5km long.
