A three-dimensional animation: a virtual flight above and below the Aegean Sea.
The geography of the archipelago is rendered in full — the islands, and the seabed beneath them, which is the part usually left out of any representation of the region and which is, geologically, the same landscape continued underwater. The model was built on NASA geographical data, at a resolution of twenty metres for the islands and one hundred metres for the seabed.
Along the way, the flight passes over some of the most important underwater artefacts and antiquities of Greek history — objects that are inaccessible in every ordinary sense, lying at depths and in places where almost no one will ever see them.
Which is the argument the two Venice works make together. Aegean Pulse renders the Aegean as movement in time; Aegean Fly Through renders it as a continuous surface that does not stop at the waterline. Between them, the archipelago stops looking like a scattering of islands and starts looking like one thing.
