The students in INFO 6070; Reading and Reading Practices at Dalhousie University, spent the semester reading across genres in the hopes of strengthening their readers' advisory skills. This website displays the books that were read along with students' annotations. Click on the black and white book icon to be taken to the Halifax Public Libraries catalogue to read the book yourself! Please note that not all books are available. If there is no book icon, consider contacting the library to request an inter-library loan or suggest the book for purchase.
A Note About Genres
Genres are ways of categorizing books to make them more easily found by readers. As with all categorization though, it’s not straightforward. So many genres, small subgenres, and crossover genres exist. Students were encouraged to read widely, perhaps dwell in a book they wouldn’t typically, to think and write about how we are drawn to different types of books and why, and to explore some of the resources that can support them in connecting others to books that would resonate with them. The intention was not to be very strict at all with genre or subgenre definition or categorization. Very rarely is something one thing; richness is found in the way things blur and overlap.
