Goal: To ascertain library collection and connection development policies first in your library, and then across the various libraries studied in class.

Product: A QuickWrite describing the collection and connection development policy of your library as compared with other libraries being studied in class.

Part 1:

Collect data from your library's collection development policy using the following questionnaire. Complete the questionnaire and submit it before workshop 7. Come prepared to discuss your answers in workshop 7.

Describe briefly the collection policy of the library you studied.
How does this compare with other libraries of my type studied by class members?
How does this compare across types of libraries studied in class?

Tips: Collection Policy

Try to find an existing policy for the library you are studying.
If you find one, compare the ideas it covers vs. the topics listed in the text book and/or in other collection development policies you have been able to locate for a library of your type. This comparison will help you critique the current policy and suggest topics that need to be revised, added, or deleted.
If there is no collection policy for your library, then try to find some existing policies for your type of library. Use these and the textbook to propose a policy and the major topics that it should cover.
Check out other topics in chapters 20-25 of the textbook. Include those concerns as a forward-looking policy is constructed and implemented. Topics include: intellectual freedom, advertising of the collection, evaluation measures, maintenance of the collection, access and privacy, and other issues confronting your type of library.
