Verghese: My mother's influence was really profound. As you mentioned, when she was in her seventies, she penned a manuscript for my niece, who was 5 years old at the time, because my niece asked her what it was like when she was a little girl. My mom was floored by the question. How does she communicate to a 5-year-old girl what her own 5-year-old existence was like? She was born in the 1920s, with no running water or lights. It was still true when I went to visit in the summers, and it wasn't a deprivation. Far from it. It was beautiful, with ghostly-lit evenings that were quite special. The harsh electric light kind of destroyed the mood.
I have to give a shout out to Stanford. This is not self-serving because my boss is here, but do you know how many universities will back someone like me, and allow me to have this aspect of my life? It's a long-term investment. It has been 10 years and now it's bringing to Stanford, I hope, the kind of acclaim that it deserves for their support. I've been quite lucky. I'm praying every night, counting my blessings, full of gratitude for everything that's happened in the past 10 years or more.
This has been fun. It's a rare opportunity to turn the table around and get some of your inner thoughts about this masterwork. It's an extraordinary experience just to go through it and to learn about the condition that you somehow discovered to lace the generations together, the evolution of modern medicine, and these characters that you inevitably love, and somehow you bring hope into tragedy.

Going back to the Greek and Roman writers, you've taken tragedy and showed us hope. You've connected people who we can connect with. 56. While the earnings of a minority are growing exponentially, so too is the gap separating the majority from the prosperity enjoyed by those happy few. This imbalance is the result of ideologies which defend the absolute autonomy of the marketplace and financial speculation. Consequently, they reject the right of states, charged with vigilance for the common good, to exercise any form of control. A new tyranny is thus born, invisible and often virtual, which unilaterally and relentlessly imposes its own laws and rules. Debt and the accumulation of interest also make it difficult for countries to realize the potential of their own economies and keep citizens from enjoying their real purchasing power. To all this we can add widespread corruption and self-serving tax evasion, which have taken on worldwide dimensions. The thirst for power and possessions knows no limits. In this system, which tends to devour everything which stands in the way of increased profits, whatever is fragile, like the environment, is defenseless before the interests of a deified market, which become the only rule.
73. New cultures are constantly being born in these vast new expanses where Christians are no longer the customary interpreters or generators of meaning. Instead, they themselves take from these cultures new languages, symbols, messages and paradigms which propose new approaches to life, approaches often in contrast with the Gospel of Jesus. A completely new culture has come to life and continues to grow in the cities. The Synod noted that today the changes taking place in these great spaces and the culture which they create are a privileged locus of the new evangelization.[61] This challenges us to imagine innovative spaces and possibilities for prayer and communion which are more attractive and meaningful for city dwellers. Through the influence of the media, rural areas are being affected by the same cultural changes, which are significantly altering their way of life as well.

In order to sustain dialogue with Islam, suitable training is essential for all involved, not only so that they can be solidly and joyfully grounded in their own identity, but so that they can also acknowledge the values of others, appreciate the concerns underlying their demands and shed light on shared beliefs. We Christians should embrace with affection and respect Muslim immigrants to our countries in the same way that we hope and ask to be received and respected in countries of Islamic tradition. I ask and I humbly entreat those countries to grant Christians freedom to worship and to practice their faith, in light of the freedom which followers of Islam enjoy in Western countries! Faced with disconcerting episodes of violent fundamentalism, our respect for true followers of Islam should lead us to avoid hateful generalisations, for authentic Islam and the proper reading of the Koran are opposed to every form of violence.
Obtain for us now a new ardour born of the resurrection,
 that we may bring to all the Gospel of life
 which triumphs over death.

and died 9 months later in 1991!! I had nothing but death around me!! Iost my family from 1989, to 2003!!!

I am so sorry for this incredible loss that you have been through. Have you considered a support group? Sometimes, especially when feeling the loss of so many family, it can be helpful to connect with others who are experiencing deep grief. Many local hospices and hospitals have these types of grief support groups. There is a wonderful, though overwhelming and deeply sad, book called Wave by Sonali Deraniyagala. SHe lost both of her parents, her husband, and her two children in a natural disaster. Her book is one that can be quite comforting to others who have lost many family.
