This artifact is a movie poster from the original Godzilla movie, which was released in Japan in 1954. The movie was extremely popular in Japan following its release, and was considered a box-office success, with it leading to the creation of many more Godzilla movies. The movie is centered around a giant amphibious monster, known as Gojira in Japanese, that destroys everything in its sight, leaving only devastation and chaos as it passes through.4 In the movie, it is said that the monster was awoken directly through American nuclear testing in the Pacific Ocean, which ultimately set it down its path of destruction. The movie serves as one of the first examples of the fears of nuclear weapons being used in films, as it references the potential consequences of nuclear testing and the use of nuclear weapons in general. The film also serves to symbolize the fear of the radiation left behind from nuclear weapons, and how many feared the radiation could have many unknown consequences, such as creatures mutating. While ultimately serving as a critique of nuclear testing, this movie marked the beginning of major sources of cultural influence, such as Hollywood, using fears surrounding nuclear weapons to entertain audiences around the world.
