According to Fortune Business Insights, the global solar floating panel market size was valued at USD 63.49 billion in 2025. The market is projected to grow from USD 78.34 billion in 2026 to USD 421.37 billion by 2034, exhibiting a CAGR of 23.4% during the forecast period. North America dominated the global solar floating panel market with a 21% revenue share in 2025.
Solar floating panels are photovoltaic modules installed on floating structures across water bodies such as reservoirs, lakes, ponds, and selected industrial water facilities. These systems generate electricity without requiring extensive land areas, making them an alternative for locations where suitable land is limited or expensive. Floating solar installations can also help reduce water evaporation and may benefit from the cooling effect of water, which can support panel performance under suitable conditions.
Key Market Drivers
Increasing Demand for Renewable Energy
The global transition toward renewable energy is a major factor driving the solar floating panel market. Governments, utilities, and private organizations are investing in solar power to diversify electricity generation and reduce dependence on fossil fuels. Floating solar installations offer an additional deployment option where land availability limits conventional solar projects. As renewable energy capacity expands, floating photovoltaic systems may become increasingly attractive for suitable reservoirs and other water bodies.
Market Restraints
High Initial Installation and Infrastructure Costs
Floating solar projects require specialized floating platforms, anchoring systems, electrical connections, and installation equipment. These additional components can increase upfront costs compared with some land-based solar installations. Projects may also require site-specific engineering studies and specialized maintenance arrangements. These cost considerations can affect project feasibility, particularly in locations where financing is limited or conventional solar installations are less expensive.
