Root canal treatment definition – root canal treatment represents the stomatology treatment which addresses disorders (diseases) inside the tooth (of nerve).
Root canal disorders – are those disorders that appear at dental pulp level (nerve) and are composed of inflammation or nerve infection. By performing canal treatment the inflammation and infection mentioned above are removed, thus removing the risk of complications and endodontic disorders.
Endodontic disorder complications – are generated by the failure to treat on time inflammation or infection at dental pulp level (nerve). If a tooth was affected by decay or has suffered a trauma (accident) and hasn’t received proper care, inflamed nerve from the decay or trauma suffers a biological degradation process. Following this process bacteria (microbes) are formed and toxins are disposed that enter the periapical space (tip of the root) causing infection. These infections can lead to a total compromise of the tooth which will have to be extracted. Therefore endodontic disorder complications represent tip of the root teeth infections, being one of the main causes for teeth loss.
Why should we save teeth?
Saving a tooth is important due to the fact that its loss is an event with a general echo in the dentomaxillary system level. A lack of space resulted after extraction leads to an esthetic deficit (if the tooth is placed in the frontal part of the dental arcade) as well as a functional deficit (reduces mastication efficiency) if the tooth is from the lateral area of the dental arcades. Losing a tooth, not followed by prosthetics (replacement of respective tooth) leads to distant secondary complications – occlusion imbalance (mastication) with consequences at the temporomandibular joint level (connection between mandible and skull bones).
Therefore, saving teeth from extraction becomes an important aspect in modern stomatology – minimally invasive. Root canal treatment offers solutions for saving teeth. At the same time it should be noted that there is a limit to which we have to try saving a tooth. All that lies beyond the limit is more harmful and will increase costs to repair what we actually believe we are saving.
A tooth with good implanting (good degree of root insertion into bone) but with profound decay lesion almost reaching the nerve can be properly treated through endodontic treatment and in this case saved from extraction. So, treatment cost through endodontic saving and crown restoring may be lower than that of a surgical treatment for dental implant insertion in the post extraction area.
Technologic evolution has left its mark on this branch of stomatology thus making endodontic treatment a more predictable one (with higher chances of success). Some of the special technologic means with endodontic implementation are:
Surgical canal treatments (endodontic microsurgery)
Represents an endodontic branch which can be applied in cases where canal treatment cannot be performed on an orthograde manner (approach from the dental crown). Classic approach can be hampered by fractured root canal instruments, root canals with fillings which cannot be removed or canals with extremely complicated anatomy (morphology) (overly curved canals or extremely narrow). In all these cases the tooth can present disorders at the root tip (infections) which still need to be treated. For this, surgical treatments are performed, of which we mention – transmaxillary drainage, periapical curettage, apical resection, premolarization, coronal-radicular amputation.
Special root canal treatments
There are treatments that use the contribution of systems for preparing, cleaning (sterilization) and special obturation. Special systems for preparing root canals are rotation needles of various conicity (thickness) adapted to each clinical situation in part. Sterilization or disinfection of root canal from microbes can be performed with bacterial dissolving solutions, action enhanced with therapy laser aid. Obturation (closing) the root canal after treatment is carried out with materials that ensure its airtight closing. Materials used for obturation are placed on the entire length of the canal using special obturation techniques of which we remind – cold lateral condensation, warm vertical condensation, thermomechanical condensation, ultrasound condensation, obturation material injecting technique.
Is root canal treatment painful?
We all know the jokes being made about root canal treatments or the way they unfold from the past. The expression “he took out the nerve alive” is probably familiar…
Root canal treatment is performed to liberate the patient from pain, not to induce pain. Throughout the treatment, you as a patient will be anesthetized. The doctor who will handle you has highly developed anesthesia protocol, which will make you feel absolutely nothing during the session. After ending the treatment, teeth may present slight sensitivity which can be controlled with regular painkillers. If the sensitivity amplifies, you must contact us at the emergency number for the endodontic doctor.
What is the cost for a root canal treatment?
Cost may vary depending on the difficulty of your case. For example molars (lateral area teeth) are harder to treat. You as a patient must understand that saving a tooth from extraction by canal treatment and its rehabilitation are far less expensive procedures than rehabilitating a lack of space left behind after an unjustified extraction.
How will the teeth look like after a root canal treatment? Will they suffer any color changes
In the past, teeth that went through a canal treatment often modified color becoming darker (shades of grey). However, through modern techniques of high quality root canal irrigation, the teeth color won’t change anymore. Still, if this occurs, you as a patient of our clinic must know that we have at hand all methods (internal/external dental whitening) to restore the natural aspect of the tooth in question.
Will the tooth be protected from other threats after the root canal treatment ends?
After the root canal treatment is finalized, tooth must regain its functions immediately – mastication esthetics. It should be noted that a tooth that has undergone a root canal treatment has a lower degree of elasticity. For this, it must be rehabilitated as soon as possible after the root canal treatment in order to ensure that it has a longer lifespan on the dental arcades.
