As State Senator Greg Leding says, the end is near for the Arkansas legislative session. Hopefully things will wrap up soon and bring an end (maybe?) to the mischief happening in our state government. In his newsletter, he mentions several important items still working their way through:
• SB290, seeking to allow industrial swine farms in the Buffalo River watershed (BOO! HISS!) squeezed through the Senate Agriculture Committee Tuesday and passed the Senate on Thursday. Call or email your state representative. This is especially important if you live in a rural district. Find your representative using this link https://www.arkansashouse.org/learn/district-map . Contact the Governor using this link: https://governor.arkansas.gov/interact/contact-the-governor/ She opposes the bill, but we want to encourage her to veto it if it passes the House.
• Read about other important items – new prison appropriation (failed so far but it's not gone); SB536, a bill to abolish the state library board (cleared the Senate but failed to earn enough votes to adopt an emergency clause); SB2, to repeal our state’s fluoridation program. This is the last few weeks of the Arkansas legislative session, which they anticipate concluding around April 16. Today and tomorrow will be heavy filing days for new bills. One bill that is almost sure to move forward is Senate Bill 426, which would mandate that Arkansas law enforcement agencies help ICE in the apprehension and deportation of undocumented migrants held in local jails and state prisons. The new state prison appropriation bill, Senate Bill 354, will likely also come up for a vote. You can read about more issues in Greg Leding’s weekly newsletter here: https://mailchi.mp/bbeada528e23/arleg-update-back-at-it Greg’s newsletter includes a section on how to contact your Arkansas senator or rep.

This Friday, Feb 28 is a national economic boycott. During the boycott, participants are asked to not make any purchases online or in-store, particularly at big retailers. More information: https://thirdact.org/texas/2025/02/10/u-s-economic-blackout-planned-for-feb-28/
Greg Leding’s Constituent Coffee: Friday , Feb 28, 9 AM – 10 AM. At Basecamp Coffee Company, 2850 N. College Ave., Fayetteville. He also sends out an excellent newsletter if you want to keep up with what is happening in the Arkansas legislature: https://www.gregleding.com/newsletter (P.S. buying a coffee on the boycott day is OK – it’s a local business).
Postcard Writing! This Saturday, March 1, from 1 – 2:30 pm at the Washington County Democrats headquarters (1102 S Thompson St Suite G, Springdale, AR 72762.) This is a come-and-go event to address postcards to voters in support of Susan Crawford for Wisconsin Supreme Court. More info on Judge Crawford is here: https://www.crawfordforwi.com/ We will supply addresses, postcards, and pens/markers. Please help us with donations for postage if you can. Please RSVP at this form if you can attend – we have limited room and want to make sure we have enough supplies. https://forms.gle/BzzWToAyQMPSf4cn6
The Washington County Democrats are marching in the Fayetteville Mardi Gras parade this Saturday 3/1 – assemble at 1, parade starts at 2. This is a fun event – masks and beads – not a protest. But it's an opportunity to show people that Democrats are active in the community. Contact volunteers@washcodemocrats.com if you want to participate or for more info.
SIDEWALK MARCH AGAINST FACISM: There will be a march on Tuesday, March 4, starting at 1 pm at the Washington County Courthouse. Then down Dixon, and up Block to Town Square where there will be tables, speakers, and maybe food! A few items to note:
• Bring your signs!
• “Sidewalk March” means we will have to stay on the sidewalks. (We would need a permit to march in the streets – not enough time to get one!)
• We will need volunteers to manage an Indivisible NWA table like we did on President’s Day. Let me know if you can help.
We also heard of another opportunity called Stand Up for Science with an event on March 7. As far as we know, we don't have a Stand Up For Science event locally yet, but the national organizers encourage everyone to participate in a walkout at your campus or workplace at noon (local time), Friday, March 7. Several bills would make it much more difficult to gather signatures for the citizen-led initiative petition process. This process allows us to exercise our right to change laws and amend the state Constitution. More information:
Libraries are under attack from a couple directions. PBS is also included on SB 184. Many people believe the final objective of bills like these is to weaken and defund these two important sources of information. Read more:
HB 1422, the “Only Citizens Vote Act” is another attempt to single-out immigrants by labeling their drivers licenses with the phrase “non-citizen”. We already have laws in place to prevent non-citizens from voting, and this labeling could lead to voter suppression and discrimination. Please call Congress to oppose Trump taking the side of Russia against Ukraine, and trying to gaslight the American people (using Russian propaganda) about the cause of the war.
