Indigo Lake is a small, roughly triangular lake in Summit County, Ohio, in the United States.[1] It is not a natural lake, having been created by the park service in Cuyahoga Valley National Park. It is a popular fishing location, with several species present including the Largemouth bass.[1]

Originally the site of Gray's Quarry, a gravel and sand pit, Indigo Lake came under the responsibilities of the National Park Service on December 27, 1974, with the creation of the Cuyahoga Valley National Recreation Area.[2] The pit was later filled with water by park service personnel to create what was subsequently called "Indigo Lake", which remains in place sustained by a constant supply of water from several natural springs in the immediate area. It is situated entirely within the boundaries of Cuyahoga Valley National Park.[3]

Description: The Indigo Lake Trail (#3549) winds through old growth trees and high mountain meadows before arriving at its namesake lake. From here, there are beautiful views of the intensely blue waters and of the jagged Sawtooth Ridge that rises over the lake. There is plenty of opportunity for solitude for those who backpack in to the small and remote campground near the lake. Be warned that after the snow melts, and typically through the end of July, the mosquitos are merciless. Once at the lake it's worth hiking the loop around the lake that begins at the entrance of the campground.

Directions: From Eugene, continue south on Highway 58 continuing two miles east of Oakridge. Turn right onto Kit Springs Road and turn right again onto Forest Service Road 21. Continue on FS Road 21 for 32 miles and then turn left onto Road 2154. From there follow 2154 to Timpanogas Campground. The trailhead is adjacent to the campground.

The trail winds through open stands of mountain hemlock, Pacific silver fir and high mountain meadows before reaching Indigo Lake. Named for its intense, deep blue color, the lake lies nestled below Sawtooth Mountain.

Proceed 2 miles east of Oakridge, Oregon, on Highway 58 to the Kitson Springs Road junction. Turn right and continue .5 miles to Forest Road 21. Turn right and proceed for 32 miles to Road 2154. Turn left and follow Road 2154 to Timpanogas Campground.

Please stay in one of the primitive sites, which are widely spaced and allow for solitude. Follow Leave No Trace methods so those after you can enjoy their stay. Mosquitoes can be very pesky the first half of the season.

We left the lake and headed back uphill toward the PCT. We were aiming for a switchback about a mile from where we had left the PCT. The climb up to the switchback was a good deal steeper than the slope we had originally come down to reach the lake and as we neared the PCT we encountered some tightly packed young trees which dictated where we were able to go. We managed to regain the PCT maybe a hundred yards from where we had been shooting for.

It was approximately 3.3 miles from the switchback viewpoint to the summit trail. The PCT stayed near the top of the ridge offering several views to both the north and south as well as our next goal.

Cowhorn Mountain

Maiden Peak was in front of the Three Sisters and it was interesting to see how close they looked to that peak from our current location. We had just recently been on Maiden Peak and even though those mountains had been mostly hidden by clouds they seemed further away from that peak than they did now.

We were now in the Oregon Cascades Recreation area, the largest unprotected roadless area left in the Cascades. We headed left on the Windy Pass Trail which followed a ridge west toward Sawtooth Mountain for approximately two miles to a junction with the Indigo Extension Trail.

The Windy Pass Trail continued to the left passing behind Sawtooth Mountain. We would be taking that trail the next day when we climbed Sawtooth Mountain but for now we headed right toward Indigo Lake. The trail passed a nice viewpoint of Sawtooth Mountain before beginning a steeper descent toward the lake via a series of switchbacks.

We decided to take another detour off-trail prior to reaching Indigo Lake to see if we could get to a small unnamed lake shown on the map. We left the trail when we appeared to be at a comparable elevation to the lake and managed to find it without much difficulty. The little lake was a beautiful green and had a nice view of Sawtooth Mountain.

A large, bowl-shaped, scenic lake that truly glows the color of [blue] indigo, Indigo Lake is a lesser-known birding locale but a favorite area for hikers, cross-country skiers, and anglers. The Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad makes an official station stop at the Indigo Lake Trailhead along the Towpath Trail, but otherwise, the open view and surrounding grassy hills make for a quiet venture for the outdoor enthusiast.

The surrounding fields and second growth woodland edges are active during Summer with nesting Orchard and Baltimore Orioles, Blue-winged Warblers, Field and Song Sparrows, Eastern Towhee, Eastern Kingbird and Willow Flycatcher, Eastern Phoebe, Gray Catbird, and Brown Thrasher.

Though a short distance from the urban areas of Cleveland and Akron, Cuyahoga Valley National Park seems worlds away. The park is a refuge for native plants and wildlife and provides routes of discovery for visitors. The winding Cuyahoga River gives way to deep forests, rolling hills, and open farmlands. Walk or ride the Towpath Trail to follow the historic route of the Ohio & Erie Canal.

Restrooms at locations identified on Cuyahoga Valley National Park map. Most areas have non-flush toilets; there are flush toilets available at the Pine Hollow parking lot on Quick Road and the Virginia Kendall Lake lodge building.

A small lake west of the WIP house (Furniture Store) in the middle of the Thalassian Cliffs route. It can be accessed from the top floor of Aguamarina Caves. There is a short route down to the lower part of Indigo Lake with Temtem trainers and a few itemboxes.

Where does the mighty Willamette River begin? Early explorers assumed such a large river might stretch 1000 miles or more. An imaginative 1830 map traced the watercourse to Utah, where it allegedly sprang from the Great Salt Lake, a mystical inland sea known to the Paiute tribe as Timpanogas.

Early in the 1900s the Forest Service surveyed the river more precisely. And although they found that the various branches started in many different places, the main branch of the Middle Fork Willamette River actually spilled from a beautiful, unnamed lake at the foot of a little-known Cascade peak, Cowhorn Mountain. Recalling the charm of the imaginative 1830 chart, the Forest Service mappers dubbed their mountain lake Timpanogas.

The view of Crescent Lake steals the show up here. To the left are the Three Sisters, the sinuous shore of Summit Lake, snowy Diamond Peak, and the U-shaped canyon of the Middle Fork Willamette River. To the south look for broad Mt. Bailey, Crater Lake's jagged rim, and Mt. Thielsen's spire.

Cowhorn Mountain was originally named for a horn-shaped summit spire. Ever since that pinnacle fell off in a 1911 storm, Cowhorn Mountain has been the least widely recognized of the High Cascades' major peaks.

After admiring the view atop Cowhorn Mountain, return to the Windy Pass Trail and turn right to complete the loop. In another 2.7 miles, just beyond a small lake, turn left at a Timpanogas Lake pointer for 1.1 mile. Then turn right on the Timpanogas Lake shoreline trail to complete the loop back to the campground and your car.
