"Leadership is practiced not so much in words as in attitudes and in actions." - Harold S. Geneen
To us, leadership is about showing others how we can serve, make positive changes, and grow from our experiences. We focus on our own actions and attitudes to lead others by example. By accurately preparing for our trip, we entered Indianapolis with prior knowledge and understanding. Throughout our trip, we maintained a positive outlook and attitude as we served others. Finally, we will reflect on our trip and apply our experience in Indianapolis in Iowa City. Overall, leadership is a significant outcome as we are example of active citizens.
Throughout our experience in Indianapolis with a focus on Food Justice, we volunteered at Wheeler Mission, Midwest Food Bank, and Gleaners Food Bank. We spent a total of 24 hours volunteering in a matter of 3 days. Wheeler Mission is an all mens crisis center that provides food, shelter, and support to those in need. While we were there we spent time in the kitchen preparing food for the men who we later served lunch. Within the 45 minute time frame to serve lunch to the men, we served 133 men. At Midwest Food Bank, we spent the day providing and packing food that was taken to smaller food pantries in Indiana. Lastly, during our 8 hours at Gleaners Food Bank we sorted 15,000 pounds of food and packaged 11,000 meals for families in need. In our second part of the day at Gleaners, we spent time in the food pantry helping individuals who were there to recieve enough food to support their families for the week. Overall, our group as a whole had a very strong passion to make an impact in the lives of others with our time in Indianapolis.
Through our trip we learned ways that we can use leadership in our future to help make positive social change. We learned if their is a change you see that needs to be made, you need to be the one to take the first step and lead by example. As leaders we need to be the one to speak up and be advocates for those who can't be there to speak for themselves.
