I wrote this story by drawing from the skimpy details put forward in one of the Ramayana versions. The story talked of Hanuman being assailed by a sea demon, Simhika, as he attempted to cross the sea to Lanka. He simply kills it and moves on, but that's not very satisfying, so I decided to spruce that up a bit. There wasn't much information given, so I had fun with it and added the time element of the tide to for a bit more tension in the story. I have looked at maps of India and Sri Lanka and the island chain that is strung between them. For this new take on Hanuman's journey, I decided that the spaces between the islands in the chain were only above the surface during low tide. If I hadn’t decided to do this, I would have had to use a different kind of creature, rather than a fish, since Hanuman could have stayed on dry land. The creature I have constructed in this is actually based off of a giant version of a football fish. They are a kind of angler fish with some really gnarly teeth. I left out the lure that comes out of their head, but I may look into adding that to the story in the next few weeks, just to build a more vivid picture of this monstrosity.
