Why was this place so secret?

This place was practically unknown to people since that was what the government and its military forces wanted to be invisible to both its people and its enemies.

They worked with the ❝ships❞ to have a better range, without being detected by the Soviet Union, in order to be one step ahead of them and therefore, one step ahead of victory.

How did this myth arise?

On July 2, 1947, Mac Brazel, a New Mexico farmer, discovered strange remains on his ranch. They were taped-together metal sticks, bits of plastic, and aluminum reflectors, along with a host of other heavy, shiny, paper-like materials. Nothing Brazel had seen resembled the object built from those pieces, so he called the Roswell sheriff. The sheriff in turn called the nearest military air base, which collected all the debris found in that area and took it away in armored trucks. In the absence of an official explanation, the regional newspaper, the Roswell Daily Record, carried the following headline: "RAAF captures flying saucer on ranch in Roswell region."

One of the Air Force officials tried to reassure the population that the alleged flying saucer was a weather balloon. He was not very convincing.

For several decades the story was gaining strength and growing. In 1995, the alleged filming of an autopsy of a fallen alien in Roswell was presented. It would end up recognizing that it was a farce. But even the astronaut, Edgar Mitchell, claimed to have confirmation from high-ranking government officials that the Roswell case was related to UFOs and non-terrestrial beings.

Successive discoveries of strange objects and faceless beings in the New Mexico region, together with the silence of the authorities, fueled the stories about aliens kidnapped by the US government to examine their ships and bodies.

Edward Snowden himself claims to have searched the CIA files for evidence of the existence of beings from other planets, but to no avail. The reports that do explain what was happening there have been where the CIA details the tests of the U-2, a research and development project for reconnaissance aircraft. During the Cold War, the United States and Russia fought to demonstrate their technological might.

Area 51 was born like this, with the approval of President Eisenhower to design a plane that would fly at high altitude and be more difficult for the Russians to detect so that they could not shoot it down. They chose southern Nevada for testing and training.

The U2 reached altitudes above 60,000 feet, while commercial aircraft of the 1950s were limited to 10 or 20,000 feet and the military stayed at 40,000 feet. Seeing a flying object at such a height was not normal.

U2 became a UFO. Let's not forget that it stands for Unidentified Flying Object, no Martians. It took until 2013 for the US government, basically the CIA and President Obama, to acknowledge the existence of Area 51.
