Recent population changes around the world have altered society’s needs, and therefore educational needs with classrooms worldwide becoming increasingly diverse. In the U.S., the proportion of students with diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds in many urban and rural areas exceeded 60% of the total student population. In Europe, who has probably being facing the biggest change of population during the last five years with the recent immigration and migration waves from Syria and Africa, the percentages are even higher. The available data suggests that, the recent and continuous influx of refugees and asylum seekers in EU States is likely to further increase the diversity of the learner population in European classrooms in the near future (EU 2016). These recent changes mean that classrooms consist of students from different cultures, using different languages, that often lack a common language or common communication code (EU 2016; Meyer & Crawford 2011). The aforementioned, results in the need to think of ways to support students and teachers in the classroom.
The conference “Teaching Science and Mathematics in Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Settings” aims to bring together researchers, practitioners and stakeholders from around the world to discuss issues pertaining to the role of language and cultural in STEM. The conference is organized by the Department of Education at the University of Nicosia as part of the IncluSMe project (https://inclusme-project.eu).
