We are a group of people inspired (and slightly obsessed) with the study of, and engagement with numismatics. We are also keen to broaden the field of numismatics and create opportunities for all to engage with coins, banknotes, tokens and medals. To this end we have secured funding by the Royal Numismatic Society and the support of the Bank of England to run a conference tentatively to be held in September 2023 in which we will explicitly seek to create a welcoming space, and deliver financial support for voices for all in numismatics. We have an explicitly inclusionary agenda to hear from women, people of colour, those from the LGBTQ+ community and anyone who has a passion for numismatics, but has not necessarily found that existing forums for sharing their study, research or work have been the right place.
If you're interested in our project but don't have the time to commit to a steering committe or another project, join our mailing list to find out when we open our call for papers and registration for the conference - we'd love to see you there
Our goal is to create an inclusive and respectful environment for our first and any subsequent Inclusive Numismatic Network events. We want to see a specialism that reflects the society it serves, and as such have worked hard to encourage people from a wide range of ethnicities, countries, gender expressions, sexualities, religions, appearances, career and working statuses and economic backgrounds to contribute to our first event.
We have attempted to remove barriers to participation for people from marginalised groups, in the following ways:
Our first event is completely free of charge to attend, removing the significant financial barrier that many conferences have
We obtained grant funding in order to support travel costs for speakers and attendees
We obtained funding to be able to supply food and refreshments for all
We organised an open submission process to encourage the widest possible range of speakers and panellists
Introduced a Code of Conduct for all event participants and attendees
Although our collective is diverse in some ways, we recognise that our core organisers are an all-white, all-woman group. We are committed to improving this, alongside recognising, strengthening and amplifying the intersections our work has with other organisations in the sector.
We would love to ensure that future events are even more diverse, and would appreciate your help with that. If you feel able to, the following things would be helpful:
Recommend yourself or others as speakers for future events, particularly those from backgrounds which are currently underrepresented in the above diversity statistics
Share our aims with colleagues – including those from marginalised groups
Speak up when you see behaviour that goes against our Code of Conduct
Share your ideas on best practice for the future
This is a learning process for all of us and if there is anything here that we could do better, or concerns you, please contact us via inclusivenumismatics@gmail.com
