When I first moved to this place, it was rural and the land's function hadn't been designed. It contained the remnants of the logging industry, and most of the people who lived here were poor. No one knew about it. I knew that sometimes a famous person moving in can start a gentrification movement, so I've been very quiet here for 30-plus years. But now, five miles away on the Sunshine Coast, developers are beginning to clear cut areas so the wealthy people can build houses and bring in their yachts. And then we learned that we don't own the mineral rights to our land. A company started poking around, wanting to tear a mountain down for gravel, then build a giant conveyor belt out into the ocean where the gravel would be picked up by huge diesel-powered boats several times a day. The deal ended up falling through, but it still concerns everyone living here.

The song talks about my neighbor, caretaker and friend, Hans, who says, "When I get to heaven, if it is not like this, I'll just hop a cloud and I'm coming back down here..." It ends with the line about having the "genius to save this place." I remember an actor in L.A. telling me once that everyone's a genius. I didn't agree with him, but then I thought, wouldn't it be nice if that were true.

The arrangement featured a distinctive bass lead by group member Chas Chandler.[9] This was the first single not to be recorded by the original line-up, following as it did the departure of keyboard player Alan Price and his replacement by Dave Rowberry. It featured one of singer Eric Burdon's typically raw, fierce vocals.[10][11] Rolling Stone described the overall effect as a "harsh white-blues treatment from The Animals. As [Burdon] put it, 'Whatever suited our attitude, we just bent to our own shape.'"[12]

The song reached number 2 on the UK Singles Chart on August 14, 1965 (held out of the top slot by the Beatles' "Help!").[13] The following month, it reached number 13 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, its highest placement there.[14] In Canada, the song also reached number 2, on September 20, 1965.[citation needed]

In the US the song (in its "mistaken" take) was included on the album Animal Tracks, released in the autumn of 1965, and again on the popular compilation The Best of The Animals released in 1966 and re-released with an expanded track list on the ABKCO label in 1973. The song was not on any British Animals album during the group's lifetime. Cash Box described the US version as a "laconic, blues-drenched romancer about a duosome who feel hemmed-in living in the city."[15] Record World said that "the Animals wail for 3:17 worth...about the pressures of the city on young lovers" and considered it as a counterexample to the proposition that "rock and roll lyrics don't mean anything."[16]

Once Animals' reissues began occurring during the compact disc era, Allen Klein, by then owner of ABKCO and the rights to this material, dictated that the "correct" British version be used on all reissues and compilations everywhere. Thus, as US radio stations converted from vinyl records to CDs, gradually only the British version became heard. Some collectors and fans in the US wrote letters of complaint to Goldmine magazine, saying they believed the US version featured an angrier and more powerful vocal from Burdon, and in any case wanted to hear the song in the form they had grown up with. The 2004 remastered SACD Retrospective compilation from ABKCO included the US version, as did the budget-priced compilation The Very Best of The Animals.

"We Gotta Get Out of This Place" was also used in Dennis Potter's 1965 television play Stand Up, Nigel Barton and the BBC's 1996 Newcastle-set Our Friends in the North, which partially took place in the 1960s. In America it was used as the title credits song in some episodes of the Vietnam War-set television series China Beach. It was then applied to the Bin Laden family, having to leave the United States in the aftermath of the September 11th terrorist attacks, in Michael Moore's 2004 Fahrenheit 9/11. It also was featured in the soundtrack to the 1987 movie Hamburger Hill. It was used in a third-season episode of the 2000s television series Heroes. It was used as the theme song for 2002 BBC comedy TLC and the 2013 BBC series Privates. The song was also featured humorously in the Kong: Skull Island trailer[20]

"This is the place" refers to his Dad's house in California. "This is the place where all the junkies go" is talking about how all the junkies would go to his dad's house cause he was a really big drug dealer on sunset boulevard back in the day. It is about the place where he was exposed to all these new experiences - good and bad. He was introduced into the life of drugs, sex and music here. "I don't want to do it like my daddy did / I don't want to give it to my baby's kid" is talking about when his father gave him drugs. At age 12 his father gave him a joint and soon after introduced him to more serious stuff. Eventually (although by accident) he gets Heroin from his father. I believe it is talking more about just drugs here but actually about drug addiction - as this has been a large force in Anthony's life.

A perfect piece of DNA is most likely referring to a beautiful girl. And "This is the place where are the devils plead / there case from you to take what they need" is again referring to his Dad's drug dealing. "On the day my best friend died / I could not get my copper clean" is talking about the death of his best friend Hillel Slovak (who was the former RHCP guitarist). "I didn't stop using the rest of the night" (222, Kiedis). was Anthony describing the events after Hillel's death in Scar tissue.

@loves.2.splooge Hi! I was also wondering what this line is meaning.

Now I read on a dictionary page, that "wolverine" is also a nickname for an inhabitant of the state michigan (and michigan can be called "wolverine state") I don't know it this is true or not. But if it is the case, then "can I pet your wolverine" could mean, that the junkies and strange people, who visited Kiedes' dad in their home, would sometimes be like "Oh, look at you boy, how big have you become" (you, know, the things people say to other peoples kids, or when they "pet" children by pinching their cheeks or stuff like that, if that makes any sense)..

Was just some thoughts of mine (:

yes, having also read the book, literally the "place" could be refering to his fathers house in LA, it could also refer to under that brige where everyone used to go and cop there drugs including anth. but metaphoricaly the place could be the state of mind youd get into with the drugs. "time gets fast but everything gets slow" probly means that he would do his upper weather it was speed or coke, then hed weigh it out with his downers weather it be alcahol or weed. "the devils plead to take from you what they need" the devils are the addicts who would give "you" (the dealer) any excuse or lie (plead) to take what they need (the drugs). "can i isolate your gene, can i kiss your dopamine" he felt that getting drunk was appealing cos he watched his dad and his mates do it all the time, dopamine is a chemical released in your brain when your happy usually during sex or taking drugs so thats how gud he thought it was at the time. but even though the song is so upbeat, he focuses on the negatives of using, in lines like "i dont wana do just like my daddy did." he probably also felt like love was an emotion that surpased the feeling of getting high. "the masterpiece of DNA" can draw u away from taking drugs. "on the day my best friend died i could not get my copper clean" his copper is his veins and he couldnt stop injecting that china white on the day hillel died.

Father of creation unfold Your sovereign plan

Raise up a chosen generation that will march through the land

All of creation is longing for Your unveiling of power

Would You release Your anointing O God let this be the hour

Gorman engages with numerous quite important themes in this poem. They include America as a country and as an idea, suffering and fear, as well as hope and strength. The last two are the best parts of the country, traits that come out when the country is facing its worst moments, such as in the wake of Hurricane Harvey and the heroic acts of people like Jesus Contreras. There are also moments of fear and suffering, such as in Boston after the Boston Marathon bombings, in Charlottesville, and in the hearts of Dreamers who fear for their place in the United States.

Hello! Oddly enough, even though many Anabaptist churches use this hymn, it was actually written by a Hubertus Oosterhuis, a Jesuit priest. The Catholics who call it heretical are mostly the grumpy kind who would like to do away with Vatican II if they could. Thanks for the post!

In this dirty old part of the city

Where the sun refused to shine

People tell me it ain't no use in trying

My little girl, you're so young and pretty

And one thing I know is true

You're gonna die before your time is due

See my daddy in bed a-dying

See his hair a-turning grey

He's been working and slaving his life away

I know

'Cause he's been working, yeah, every day slaving his life away (work)

He's been working, baby (work)

He's been a-working, work, work, work

We gotta get out of this place

If it's the last thing we ever do

We gotta get out of this place

Girl, there's a better life for me and you

Mm, yeah

My little girl, you're so young and pretty

And one thing I know is true

You'll be dead before your time is due

Yes, you will

See my daddy in bed a-dying

See his hair been turning grey

He's been working and slaving his life away

Yes, I know

Believe me, he's been working, yeah

He's been working, yeah, whoa! (work)

He's been working, work, work, work

We gotta get out of this place

If it's the last thing we ever do

We gotta get out of this place

Girl, there's a better life for me and you

Whoa, baby

We gotta get out of this place

If it's the last thing we ever do

We gotta get out of this place

Girl, there's a better life for me and you

Oh, you know it, baby

And I know it, too, babe

Oh, yeah ff782bc1db
