History - Tradition
Our restored traditional setting is located in the traditional village Atsipopoulo, a historic village that has several stories to tell referring to its 700 years life, in Medieval & Renaissance times. The Venetians gradually established their rule over the island from 1210. There are many stories referring to Venetian dukes and noblemen in the area, army parades and dancing ceremonies of the 16th century but also to terrible battles against the Ottomans on the 17th. The coat of arms (stamp) of a great local commander Alessio Calergi, still visible by our pool has its origin in the year 1290.

About Rethymno area
RETHYMNO is a city on the north coast of the Greek island of Crete. In the old town, the Venetian Harbor is filled with fishing boats and lined with tavernas. Rethymno Lighthouse was built in the 1830s. West, the hilltop Fortezza is a star-shaped, 16th-century citadel. The Historical and Folklore Museum preserves local crafts like textiles and ceramics. Long, sandy Rethymno Beach stretches to the east.
Rethymno, in Crete, is a rare combination of history and modern-day luxury, with its Venetian-era Fortezza fortress and multicultural Old old Towntown, tropical beaches and exquisite Cretan cuisine.
Walking around is like travelling back in time, to the period of Venetian rule in Crete. The Fortezza (fortress) sits atop Rethymno’s magical old town like a crown. And you can hear the echoes of the sea and as you walk along the Venetian port with its old lighthouse and get lost in the maze of alleyways, admiring the ornate doorways and the Venetian crests that decorate them. You’ll also visit the mosques with their minarets and hop between the dozens of shops, restaurants and cafes that give Rethymno its special atmosphere.
Cultural landmarks abound in Rethymno. The Neratzi Mosque (now a music conservatory) is an obvious meeting point because of its sky-high minaret (built in 1890). And the New Square is ringed by grand homes, the Catholic Church of St Francis and an Ottoman mausoleum and school. At Platanos Square, you’ll pass bustling restaurants and cafes and arrive at the famous Rimondi Fountain, constructed in 1626. Meanwhile, Makri Steno (long alley), which leads from the National Park to the Fortezza, with its Venetian homes and marble fountains, is one of the most beautiful streets in Rethymno.
Admire the Venetian port and lighthouse:
Along Nearchou Road, you’ll get to the picturesque Venetian harbour with its restored lighthouse, built between 1830-40. And behind the port is the 16th-century Venetian Loggia.
Explore the beach that goes on and on:
The largest beach on Crete (12km) stretches along the east side of the city, from Rethymno to Skaleta. You’ll take advantage of the water sports in the Adelianos Kampos and enjoy a quiet swim in the rocky coves of the Pegianos Kampos. All along the beach, you’ll find beach bars with umbrellas and lounge chairs, shops and hotels.
Enjoy authentic Cretan flavours and a glass of raki:
Rethymno will introduce you to culinary treats inspired by Crete’s flavourful cuisine and famously tasty local produce. There are restaurants in old buildings with beautiful gardens, rakadika that serve meze complemented by the local schnapps-like drink raki, and quaint little tavernas to choose from.
Activities: Discover the Cretan culture, beautiful landscapes away from tourist areas, golden sandy beaches, breathtaking views, wildlife, Cretan herbs, traditional wine, raki, honey and olive oil, homemade food, the myths and traditions that will awaken all your senses.

The greatest attractions
in Crete:
1. CHANIA
On the first day we will be transferred in our beautiful city of Chania.
Located at the western end of Crete, the second largest city of the island, Chania has been characterized as one of the most beautiful places in Greece. The rich cultural heritage, the variety of natural environment and the mild Mediterranean climate prevailing in the wider area of Chania, make it an ideal destination all year round. Turn back in time with a stroll through the most important site of the area, the Old Town of Chania. Developed around the Venetian Harbor (so-called “Old Harbor”) with the trademark Egyptian Lighthouse, it is surrounded by the fortifications of the 16th century, beyond which lies the modern part of the city.
2. RETHYMNO
RETHYMNO is a city on the north coast of the Greek island of Crete. Rethymno Lighthouse was built in the 1830s. West, the hilltop Fortezza is a star-shaped, 16th-century citadel. Rethymno, is a rare combination of history and modern-day luxury, with its Venetian-era Fortezza fortress and multicultural Old old Towntown, tropical beaches and exquisite Cretan cuisine. We will explore the old town in detail.
3. HERAKLION
Heraklion is the largest city and the administrative capital of the island of Crete and capital of Heraklion regional unit. It is the fourth largest city in Greece with a population of 211,370. Heraklion was Europe's fastest growing tourism destination for 2017, according to Euromonitor, with an 11.2% growth in international arrivals.
Heraklion is close to the ruins of the palace of Knossos, which in Minoan times was the largest center of population on Crete. Knossos had a port at the site of Heraklion from the beginning of Early Minoan period (3500 to 2100 BC). Between 1600 and 1525 BC, the port was destroyed by a volcanic tsunami from nearby Santorini, leveling the region and covering it with ash.
We are going to visit Knossos and explore the old town, little restaurants, café, bars, shops and more.

Discover
the Cretan Horse
or Messara Horse - (Equus Caballus)
The Cretan horse is used mainly for entertainment. It’s the pride of the Cretan people, who now keep it for several reasons; the main one is enthusiasm towards the breed and determination to preserve it, as it used to be at severe risk of extinction (about 80 horses in 1982). Other reasons are social status, national pride and participation in traditional festive events. But let’s begin with the Cretan horse’s characteristics.
Temperament
If you are looking for a cute buddy to cuddle and play with, then simply forget it. Also forget it if you like stopping what you are doing with the horse and start chipping with your friends and forget about returning to silence for the rest of the day. But its sharp and fast mind and the close and deep bonds it develops with its owner are just two of its advantages. The Cretan horse is quite impatient and energetic and if you keep it still for too long without leaving it alone, it will probably start to “revolt”, moving around energetically and making a variety of noises. Too much affection looks funny if not threatening, and you might end up with a severe bite or kick as well. This horse is absolutely willing to work and wander with you wherever and under whatever conditions you like, but dislikes endless hugs, kisses and the like.
Looks
The Cretan horse is short (1.40m in average), well-built, with a small face and a fine silhouette, in various colours -mainly chestnut, black and grey. Its neck is short and thin. Also, its skin is thin enough for the upper layers of the horse’s anatomy (such as vains, bones and muscles) to be visible. Moreover, its ears are of quite small size and automatically turn towards the direction of sounds they hear. Its hoofs are small and hard. At a very early age they have their rich tails cut quite short, for their special pace not to be hindered.
5.
The Village
of Margarites.
A pottery center
The village of Margarites is 30 km south east from Rethymnon town in the centre of the island of Crete in Greece. The village of Margarites is unquestionably the most important pottery center of west Crete. Pottery is one of the oldest arts developed in Crete from 3000 BC first Minoan times and is associated with the creation of products based on the four elements of the nature: earth, water, air and fire. We are going to visit the place and there will be plenty of time to explore the pottery studios and pottery shops.
6.
Ancient Eleutherna
We are going to visit the Museum and Archaeological Site of Ancient Eleutherna. Eleutherna was an ancient city-state in Crete which lies 25 km southeast of Rethymno. Archaeologists excavated the site located on a narrow northern spur of Mount Ida, the highest mountain in Crete. It flourished from the Dark Ages of Greece’s early history until Byzantine times.
