IMX Lab stands for Immersive Media eXperience, reflecting our lab's key strengths in advancing human-centered design for immersive systems.
Our research is grounded in three fundamental pillars:
Technology, from the engineering perspective, forms the technical foundation for immersive environments—leveraging VR/AR platforms, sensing devices, AI, and interactive systems to bring ideas into reality.
Experience, viewed from the user’s perspective, emphasizes emotional and cognitive responses—how people feel, think, and engage through usability, immersion, and affective interaction.
Creativity, through the lens of the researcher, inspires us to explore novel interactions, conceptual frameworks, and expressive systems that reimagine how humans and computers relate.
Together, these three pillars guide how we design, implement, and evaluate XR systems that are not only technically robust, but also deeply human-centered and creatively impactful.
Rooted in the field of HCI, our work aims to deliver Highly Usable XR Experiences and Shape the Future of the Metaverse.
To realize this vision, we focus on three key factors, each addressing a fundamental design question:
Immersive Media: How can we capture the user’s attention quickly and effectively?
Comfortable XR: How can we maximize user enjoyment and extend the time spent in XR environments?
Believable AI/ML: How can we meet user expectations and ensure AI-driven XR content feels real?
Our approach integrates insights from HCI while also exploring affective computing grounded in cognitive/psychological principles, IoT-based sensing that connects the physical and virtual worlds, and AI-driven vision & natural language processing. Beyond developing cutting-edge XR technologies, we examine their impact on user experience (UX) and human factors, ensuring XR systems are designed for people and shaped by their needs.
