The Last Train From Gun Hill (1959)
The Last Train From Gun Hill (1959)
This entertaining drama from director John Sturges features standout performances from Kirk Douglas, Carolyn Jones and Anthony Quinn. Oh yeah, and the train footage is pretty great too.
For a traveling scene with Marshal Morgan (Douglas) and Linda (Jones), we see a shot of the Sierra Railroad led by #18. Look familiar? That's because it was lifted directly from Dodge City and reversed. Then they just darkened it for the night shot (comparison at right). Lazy filmmakers!
As the train enters town (via a matte painting in the wide shot), it has now magically transformed into the Virginia & Truckee's #22 "Inyo" pulling Coach #15 & Kimball Coach #4 - repainted as "Southwestern RR." At the time, the train was owned by Paramount Studios and this stretch of track was constructed on their western town (which is now a parking lot). After filming, the train left the lot and never returned (only to be used for location work). This engine and both cars are at Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City.
This film gives us the finest record of V&T Coach #4 that I've seen yet as the actors disembark. It has since been fully restored and sees occasional use at Nevada State RR Museum in Carson City.
This film also gives us one of the best records of Paramount's giant western town set, complete with chicken-wire "mountain" to hide the stages in the distance.
The exciting final showdown takes place as #22 rolls back into town. The Inyo (seen here pulling Coach #4 in 2022) resides at NSRM.
The big duel takes place alongside Coach #15, which Morgan rides off on at the end. Today this car resides at NSRM.
One last parting shot of #22 as it steams up to leave the station.
