Dodge City (1939)
Dodge City (1939)
The gold standard that all other westerns are judged by, this early color Warner Brothers classic has some iconic movie train imagery.
The film opens with an exciting steam train vs. stagecoach race, which features a shiny new-looking Sierra RR #18 locomotive, Northwestern Pacific baggage express car #611, and Sierra's passenger coaches #1 & 2.
The train's arrival gets this small town all excited in this scene filmed at the now ghost town of Warnerville on the Sierra line.
Scenes of the train on fire were done using the "expendable" baggage coach, which was purchased just for the film. Closeups against rear-projected footage were done using replica cars onstage at Warner Brothers Studios in Burbank. Coach #611 still survives in storage at Railtown 1897.
