Ibuprofen (e.g. Advil, Motrin) and acetaminophen (e.g. Tylenol), two common over-the-counter pain relievers, have significant health concerns when taken long-term or improperly. Overuse of ibuprofen or other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) raises the risk of stomach ulcers and renal issues. The use of acetaminophen in excess raises the risk of liver damage. Chronic opioid usage is linked to an increased risk of addiction and respiratory depression. With these dangers in mind, it's a good idea to look into supplementary pain management.

PEMF, or pulsed electromagnetic field, is a supplementary technique for pain relief. PEMF treatment

PEMF has been studied in the treatment of a variety of painful diseases, including acute injury, arthritis, and nerve problems. Researchers discovered that low-frequency PEMFs reduced edema during treatment and high-frequency PEMFs improved edema up to many hours after the treatment session, resulting in better soft tissue injury healing by reducing swelling and repairing hematoma (Markov and Pilla, 1995).

In the various situations investigated:

• When individuals with neck discomfort as a result of acute whiplash were treated with high-frequency PEMF at 27.12 MHz, their pain was significantly reduced compared to controls (Foley-Nolen et al., 1992).

• Patients with low back arthritis experienced pain relief for 90-95 percent of the time when PEMF of 35-40 mT was administered (Mitbreit et al., 1996).

• 83 individuals with osteoarthritis of the knee were studied by a study team (OA). For six weeks, participants received therapy for two hours per day, five days per week. The PEMF group showed significant improvements in pain, stiffness, and function (Thamsborg, 2005). The control group showed no increase in function after two weeks and only a slight improvement after six and twelve weeks. Unfortunately, there was no difference in pain, stiffness, or function between the PEMF and control groups, since the control group likewise had considerable pain and stiffness reduction. While function did not improve in the PEMF group for individuals over 65, there was a significant difference in stiffness between the two groups when investigators only looked at patients under 65.

• A separate device that used a sinusoidal signal at 6.8MHs in 34 individuals with early knee OA demonstrated a 60 percent decrease in pain in the first 5 days in another trial on knee OA. During the 42-day use of the device, these findings persisted, but the sham (non-active device) group showed no significant change (Nelson et al,. 2013).

• Other diabetic peripheral neuropathy investigations have had mixed findings. Two randomized controlled trials (Wrobel et al., 2008; Weintraub et al., 2009) found no significant improvements in pain with PEMF therapy, whereas two other studies (Cieslar et al., 1995; Graak et al., 2009) found substantial improvements in pain in the PEMF group.

As this brief review has shown, all of the studies discussed used different frequencies, waveforms, and strength, which makes it difficult to make a consistent recommendation for patients. However, it is useful to consider as a nondrug option for pain relief and healing because some patients report significant improvements.
