Google cracked down on third-party recording apps in the Google Play Store last year in the name of improved privacy, but it is still possible to record phone calls on Android phones -- and there's a workaround or two as well.

In some states, you do not need the other party's permission to record the call as long as you are a consenting party on the call yourself. In others, all parties must consent to the recording. Check federal and state laws before recording any phone conversation.

Google's Phone app has built-in call recording and instructions on how to record a call. However, during testing, we found that the functionality did not appear, and so while you can try to initiate this method, we will be exploring alternatives.

Google Voice is a voice-over-internet protocol (VoIP) service that was created to allow users to make and receive phone calls from anywhere using the internet. It can also be used to record incoming calls.

Using an external recorder might not be ideal option as it may require purchasing hardware. Still, if Google Voice won't work for your needs, an external recorder is an option -- whether this is a dictaphone or otherwise.

However, 'dumb' dictaphones without such connectivity might require an SD card or wired link to a PC for audio data transfer. You might also have to put your call on speaker to capture both sides of the audio properly.

Using a voice-recorder app is a potential workaround. Now, while Android call-recording functionality is locked to Google's Phone app and Accessibility services, you might be able to circumvent this by enabling a voice recorder and putting the phone call on speaker.

These apps might be able to record the environmental noise around you, including both sides of the call. Keep in mind, however, this can be risky as it is illegal in many places to record people without their consent.

Though rates may be applied if you're using Voice to make international phone calls or other calls and texts that don't use an internet connection, using Google Voice is otherwise free, including recording incoming phone calls.

While it is not illegal to record a phone conversation, state laws determine whether or not the party being recorded must be notified that they are being recorded. Google's Phone app and Voice have built-in functionality that notifies all parties on the call that they are being recorded, giving everyone freedom to end the call if they do not wish to be recorded.

If you want a record of a phone call or meeting, you could also opt for a Voice-over-IP (VoIP) platform instead. Zoom and Microsoft Teams, for example, offer meeting- and call-recording functionality. However, participants will be informed at the start of a session of the recording.

Recording phone calls on an Android device can be a challenge. While Google's own Phone app offers a recording feature, whether or not it works depends on your carrier, region, and other conditions. You can always use an external recording device, but there are also several on-device options, including Google's Phone app, Google Voice, and several third-party apps.

In the past, people were able to find workarounds to Google's block, such as changing the audio source or format, turning the speaker volume as loud as possible, recording manually instead of automatically, and even rooting their phones. Others have since taken to sideloading call-recording apps through an APK file rather than downloading them directly from Google Play.

Other countries have their own laws, of course. To fully cover yourself legally, ask the other person for permission before recording the call. With all of those limitations, restrictions, and obstacles out of the way, here are some apps that may be able to record your Android phone conversations one way or another.

With Google Voice, you choose a dedicated phone number through which incoming calls are routed to your mobile phone. After you set up your phone number and your Google Voice account, tap the app's hamburger icon in the upper-left corner. Tap Settings and turn on the switch for Incoming call options to enable call recording.

The major limitation here is that you can record only incoming calls. When you answer your phone, press the number 4 on the keypad to record the conversation. A message announces that the call is being recorded, so be sure to get the other person's permission beforehand. Press 4 again to stop the recording.

Automatic Call Recorder is a simple but effective recording app. Open the app and grant the necessary permissions to record audio, access your contacts, make and manage phone calls, and access your photos and other media. The app then warns you that due to new Google Play restrictions, future versions downloaded from the store may no longer record calls on this device.

If you leave automatic recording on by default, recording will begin any time you make or receive a phone call. You can then open the app to view the recording. From the options screen, you can save the call as an audio file to your phone, add call notes, delete the recording, or share it via email or social media.

The free version is ad-supported, but the $8.49 Pro version removes ads and kicks in other features. In testing, Automatic Call Recorder worked out of the box on an Android 9 device. When testing with Android 12, the accessibility service needed to be enabled for the app to record calls

Automatic Call Recorder Pro is a solid app with a variety of options. It first takes you through the necessary setup steps, such as enabling accessibility settings. You can then access the Settings screen and choose to automatically or manually record calls, change the audio source and format, alter the audio quality, increase the volume, or enable an option to start recording when you shake your phone.

If you set the app to automatic, it will record incoming and outgoing calls from start to finish. Tap the recording when it appears onscreen to listen to it in the app. From the recording screen, you can play the file, save it to your phone, share it via email or other services, and delete the recording.

The app is free and ad-supported, but you can pay $3.49 to remove the ads. In testing, Automatic Call Recorder Pro successfully recorded phone calls on an Android 9 device and an Android 12 device with use of the accessibility service.

Cube ACR offers more premium features than the other apps. The basic version is free but displays ads and offers no cloud-based backup for your recordings. If you need the extra features, a subscription will run you $6.99 for six months or $9.99 for a full year after a free one-week trial. However, the free version should get the job done.

In testing, Cube ACR was unable to record calls on any Android device out of the box due to a known issue. Fortunately, the developer provides a workaround. A notification advises you to install and set up a Cube ACR Helper app. After installing and configuring the Helper App, I was able to record phone calls on an Android 9 device and an Android 13 device.

Federal law (18 U.S.C. 2511) requires one-party consent, which means you can record a phone call or conversation so long as you are a party to the conversation. If you are not a party to the conversation, you can record a conversation or phone call only if at least one party consents and has full knowledge that the communication will be recorded. The statute also prohibits recording conversations with criminal or tortious intent.

Alaska

It is a misdemeanor in Alaska to record an oral or telephone communication without the consent of at least one party. The Alaska Supreme Court has held that the eavesdropping statute was intended to address only third-party interception of communications and thus does not apply to a party to a conversation.

California

Under California law, it is a crime punishable by fine and/or imprisonment to record a confidential conversation without the consent of all parties, or without a notification of the recording to the parties via an audible beep at specific intervals. The California Supreme Court has defined a confidential conversation as one in which the parties have a reasonable expectation that no one is listening in or eavesdropping. In addition to criminal penalties, illegal recording can also give rise to civil damages.

Connecticut

Under Connecticut criminal law, it is a felony to record an oral or telephone communication without the consent of at least one party. In the civil context, Connecticut law prohibits recording phone calls without obtaining consent from all parties either in writing or at the beginning of the recording. A notification at the start of the call recording, or a warning tone at 15-second intervals will also suffice. Violations can lead to damages, costs, and/or attorney fees in a civil suit.

Illinois

The state eavesdropping statute formerly required all parties to consent to the recording of any conversation or communication, or potentially face felony charges and/or civil liability. In 2014 the Illinois Supreme Court declared the law overly broad and unconstitutional. The statute was amended later that year to allow recording in public places, but still requires all parties to consent to recording conversations where there is a reasonable expectation of privacy.

Iowa

Under the state eavesdropping statute, it is a serious misdemeanor to record an oral, telephone, or other communication without the consent of at least one party. The state wiretapping law provides that it is a felony to intercept or record any oral, wire, or electronic communication without the consent of at least one party. Wiretapping offenses can also lead to civil liability.

Kansas

Under Kansas breach of privacy law, it is a misdemeanor to record a conversation or other private communication without the consent of at least one party. Violators may also be subject to civil damages. 2351a5e196
