If it comes to iMindmap you can call me an early adopter. I use this piece of software as long as it exists. Why? - Because it enables me to create very nice hand drawn like mind maps, the way Tony Buzan teaches in his books about mind mapping. In the beginning the software sometimes was a big challenge to work with but now it is one of the best mind mapping software on the planet.

What I noticed right away is that iMindmap 9 is even faster than iMindmap 8. I have experienced this on my PC (windows 7 PRO) and on my MAC (OSX Yosemite). That's a good thing to start with :)

The idea behind the newer versions of iMindmap is that you can choose various ways to start capturing your thoughts. Of course you can start drawing a mind map right away but you can also use a brainstorm canvas with sticky notes to start with. iMindmap will automatically transform this into a mind map. This is a great feature to use in group sessions.

iMindMap9 has also integrations with Dropbox, Google Drive AND Evernote. The integration with Evernote is great A lot of people use Evernote and this enables them to share their mind maps with this great platform. Way to go OpenGenius!

iMindMap is a paid app with three pricing options for students, professionals and businesses. It allows you to create mind maps, but also has planning functions such as a clever radial map tool, and org table tools. Some of the features seem professional and cleverly graphic designed, and some look like they were pulled from a cheap children's drawing app.

The version history (made with the new tool Flowchart available in 6.0) shows that ThinkBuzan has a major upgrade almost every year. The branch target is brilliant. Moving and making branches (normal or box) is easy, smooth and fast. Add-ons like grouping and snippets make life of a mind mapper easy. In case of a branch you are using very often (e.g. in projects), make a snippet, save it and use it whenever you need it in a future mind map.

iMindmap does have weak spots as well. The cleaning tool for example (not new in 6.0) I never understood. I think that most readers will agree that the mind map shown has a nice well-organised lay-out. Applying the cleaning tool the mind map looks as if it has been hit by a Tsunami. Undoing the cleaning option, does not restore the old version (all the images are scattered over the canvas). Resolution issues when exporting the imindmap file have been improved in version 6.01 (first update of version 6).

NOTE: Version 11 OF iMindMap was released the first week of May 2018. At this time (7-1-18) I have been using the program for about two months. I will have a full review posted within a week or two. As a brief note, Version 11 includes a number of enhancements. The program remains the best one for mind mapping and the updates made from Version 10 to 11 are significant and worth the upgrade price.

I doubt that there are many people expert in mind mapping who would disagree with me that iMindMap is the most feature-laden of the more than 100 programs for mind mapping to be found all over the Internet.

Get over the hype and realize that you CAN learn this program quickly on your own and even more rapidly if you study examples available without cost at many blogs including this one (Hubaisms.com), a depository of many thousands of mind maps at Biggerplate.com, and many other sites including youtube.com where many training sessions are presented.

iMindMap version 6.1 was released as a free upgrade from v6.0 on November 1, 2012. The update is great and any iMindMap user should be installing it now. Everything works a little better and a little faster and the user experience is improved as it always is with one of their upgrades. I like the fact that the developer of this program (ThinkBuzan) keeps releasing free updates every few months between the major versions (4.0, 5.0, 6.0, etc.).. I have found that each of the upgrades over the past two years has been one which introduces new features.

I think the 3-D options in the new iMindMap are super-duper, although I do recommend you play with the program for an hour because there are little tricks you can find to make the 3-D mind maps (and their presentations) more artistic and more easily understood.
