Singing has been a major way of praying since ancient times. After the Second Vatican Council, there has been a growth of various forms of Catholic music, folk, jazz, gospel style songs, have been introduced to the Hong Kong Catholic community in Cantonese, English and Mandarin.
In Hong Kong, we are blessed to have many parishes with a strong music tradition. And by the end of 2017, the Catholic music tradition has been spreading across schools in Hong Kong too. For example, three schools’ Catholic Choir/Band had participated in a Caritas fundraising event on 28th January, 2018. Also, many schools have invested time and capital on music education too, and most youths have a basic knowledge of music. Music is probably one of the most effective way to engage in praying and reigniting the faith of lapsed Catholics.
This event aims to promote cooperation between various Catholic School Choirs and Bands in Hong Kong, whether it is a Gregorian Chant, a Folk Song, a Taize Hymn or a latest Cantonese Praise Song, the cooperation can widen the horizons of the various choirs participated and allow us to engage in a new dimension of singing. In addition, people from the Taize Community will be engaged to provide a spiritual dimension to the activity.
The event would hope to achieve ignite the singing spirit of different schools, and with the use of interesting music, more people would embrace the Catholic faith, and more lapsed Catholic would return to the church.
