My Passion: ASTRONOMY
What is my passion? I’ve encountered this question for quite some time. Every time I was asked this question I kept contemplating what particular thing I most enjoy doing. Now I happen to know the answer, I feel as though I have many things I am passionate about in my life, and studying astronomy would be the most suitable answer. Astronomy is the branch of science that deals with celestial objects, space, and the physical universe as a whole. Simply, it is the study of everything in the universe beyond Earth's atmosphere. Studying it never fails to surprise me, there will always be fun facts that open my eyes and make my perspective about the universe wider. For instance, the fact that one teaspoonful of neutron star would weigh the same as the entire human population. Yet there are still tons of mystery still hidden out there, scientists may have only spilled barely 5% of the universe’s fascinating features. This shows how unknowing we are as human- beings.
In my spare time, I would read astronomy-related books, namely “Fundamental Astronomy” by Springer, “Introduction to Cosmology” by Barbara, and many more. Also, occasionally, I would join astronomy classes online. Not only for the sake of entertainment, but it has also significantly widened my astronomy knowledge which would help me in my future olympiad. In 2023 I will participate in the National Olympiad for Astronomy, I hope by doing so I can get the best result out of it.
English or Local Language?(IELTS WRITING- TASK 2)
English is the universal language of today, with its speakers widely found all over the world. Learning English at school is often prioritized compared to learning of local language. This creates an issue namely the local language extinctiontion. English has become more important to be taught in academics. However, is learning English that important? If so, how can we ensure other languages will remain?
English is a universal language that is spoken worldwide. It's a handy language that provides lots of opportunities academically and professionally. A person that's able to speak English, would be more likely to be higher in a multinational company compared to the ones who don't. As the globalization era continues to take place, more people, companies, and institutions across the world interact with each other.
Nevertheless, that doesn't mean local languages should then be ignored. Local languages aren't getting the attention they are supposed to have. Every community, city, and country has its own unique identity. Preserving their local language is very important for generations to come. It should be nourished. They would lose the identity that has been developed by their ancestors if their awareness of this is still low.
To summarize, although English is important as it is the universal language for all, it is also equally important to save our local languages. This unique identity should be nourished until future generations. In my opinion, it's best to learn both languages so we can have lots of opportunities but also remain rich in identity.
UN Day Celebration
The Mutiara Harapan School has conducted an event to celebrate the annual United Nations day which is commemorated every 24 October. It marks the anniversary of the entry into force in 1945 of the UN Charter, in other words, the United Nations officially came into being on this exact day. With the theme of “End Racism, Build Peace” the Mutiarans coming from the Junior High School actively participated in this purposeful event. End racism is a movement to stop antagonism directed against a person or people based on their membership in a particular racial or ethnic group. While building peace is a long-term process of encouraging people to talk, repairing relationships, and reforming institutions.
There are seven countries and a continent that participated in this cultural event. Namely India, South Korea, South Africa, Mexico, Japan, Indonesia, and Europe. Students of Mutiara Harapan Junior High School are divided into groups of eight to be in one of the respective countries or continent groups. They prepared their booth which showed a glimpse of each area, presented cultural performances, and did tons of other fascinating yet educational activities. Every booth has its creative way to showcase the cultural richness of their own country or continent.
All in all, it was a great experience to participate in such a warming event. It has shown that differences between countries aren't a problem but a gift. Such events should be held again in the next upcoming years.
WRITING TASK 2
Question: Some people think that teenagers should concentrate on all subjects at school. Others believe that teenagers should focus on the subject they are best at or are most interested in. To what extent do you agree?
These days, students at school are demanded to keep themselves academically focused on getting into a prestigious institution for their study after senior high school, which is university. People have different views about the idea that students should give equal concentration to all subjects taught in school. Some agree with this, but others feel that they must allocate a greater effort to the subjects they are more interested in. In this article, I’ll look at both points of view and provide a conclusion about which one I support.
By devoting most of their time to the subjects they are most interested in, they can create a more significant output from education. The biggest goal of education is to prepare students as the future generation to compete and be successful in working life. Students will be less likely to achieve this if they do not perceive what they want. Allowing students to be exposed at a greater depth to the subjects they like at school life will make them more experts towards the subject itself.
On the other hand, students these days are trained to handle a variety of subjects. This will train their time management skills and how they can handle pressure. Students, since school days, can practice to multi-task as how real life in their future would demand them to do so. Not only develop such a valuable skill, but they can also master a wider knowledge.
Students should focus more on the subjects they are best at or most interested in. This is to develop their skill towards the field and have a bright future career. This can be achieved if they are given enough time and preparation for the subject they are interested in and most likely to implement in their future career.
"Science & Technology Inventions Day"
Nowadays, people perceive holidays as just another chance to skip work or not go to school. However, behind every holiday there is a deeper meaning and that is to commemorate a certain action that happened in history or to raise a certain value to society. If I had the chance to invent a new holiday, it would be to honor inventions in Science and Technology that have taken place in human history. This is to commemorate inventions which are defined as a device, method, composition, idea, or process that is unique and new. Without inventions, the world would be downright dull and much more challenging. In this writing, I will point out ways to celebrate this day and outline the benefits of having it.
First of all, during this day, people around the world should enrich themselves with knowledge about inventions that changed the way we look at the world today. Such as how Thomas Edison invented incandescent lamps, how Graham Bell invented the telephone or any other inspiring stories from other great inventors. Learn about the patent process they showed and how they protect their ideas. Reading books or watching documentaries about inventions would be a great option I suggest. Make sure to keep up this spirit of inventing with others by sharing how they spend their “Science and Technology Inventions day” and use the #NationalInventorsDay hashtag to share on social media.
Secondly, this day would surely bring a great positive impact on the world. Humanity's inventiveness is what sets humans apart from every other species on this planet, and it's through our inventions that we can see our progress as a species. We've come a long way since the invention of the wheel, and that's worth celebrating. Youth from around the globe are expected to have the spirit to invent and hence surely thousands of inventions will come in the future.
All in all, I believe "Science and Technology Inventions Day" would light up the world with new inventions and create a better world to live in. Adding this to the calendar will be very beneficial.

Mobile phones isn't for photography(article)
(Written by: Akbar)
Do you know how many photographs are taken in a year? Estimates suggest that more than 1 trillion photos are taken. Photography is the art of capturing light with a camera, many use this to capture moments with their families and friends. People upload each and every happening in their everyday lives. Photography was invented back in 1826. The journey from then to the modern era it’s having a splendid legacy. Surely there were a lot of struggles earlier due to several mechanical reasons. However, as camera technology develops it leads to new directions in photography. According to researchers, the development of photography enthusiasts may also be due to the development of mobile phone technology in the last 20 years. But this phenomenon attracts the attention of experts, many disagree with the development of photography in these mobile devices. One of many is Henry Jacobson, who argues that the use of cell phones which originally is for communication, isn’t suitable for photography.
I don’t agree with the sayings that phones are not reliable in photography. It is undeniable that without the development of mobile phones, photography would not be as popular as it is. Your phone camera is your best camera because it's always with you. It’s the art of taking unexpected moments in your life that matters in photography. There are so many stories which are very impactful on different aspects of society, that you can immortalize using your handphone. Unlike those professional cameras that people may not always have in hand. Handphones give people the opportunity to click a digital image which wasn't possible earlier due to heavy technical & mechanical problems with the Cameras. Mobile photography is practical, reliable, and fun. According to Statista, Smartphones are causing a photography explosion with 1.2 trillion photos taken in 2017. 85% of them were taken with mobile phones. The reason causing this is people carry devices with high-quality cameras in their pockets. And the ubiquity of these cameras, combined with their unobtrusiveness, have made them effective at capturing candid moments in public spaces. Allowing them to express their thoughts and authenticate the story in their subconscious mind. You can’t deny how delightful this device is in creating picturesque photography. You can’t deny how mobile phones level up photography.
On the other hand, you will not see professional photographers using smartphones as their main cameras at weddings and sporting events. Think of how disappointing it will be for the couple, to see a once-in-a-lifetime event immortalized in such low quality. Dedicated cameras have a lot of versatility and will likely always be able to do things that a smartphone can't. Quality still counts wherever pictures play a decisive role. It's still the professional photographers with professional DSLR that provide such material. According to photographer Ditmar Schädel, he’s absolutely certain smartphones are not a threat to professional photography. With its less than 12 MP lenses, the mobile phone tends to give low-resolution images. With its limited lenses, you can never hope to enhance your photography skills. Smartphone cameras have limited manual control options. Unlike the regular cameras, you can’t control the aperture, depth of field, lighting amongst other features. This shows that a mobile phone is an electronic device used for mobile telecommunications only. Meant for talking, texting, or sending data over a wireless network.
In summary, as camera technology develops it leads to new directions in photography. The revolution of mobile phone manufacture also takes place with superclass cameras in it. A handphone is a friendly device to bring anywhere. Handphones enable people to capture a digital image everywhere and anywhere, which wasn't possible earlier due to heavy technical & mechanical problems with the Cameras. However, with its limited lenses and feature, you can’t have the best images out of it. This means that the picture quality won’t be that great. Quality still counts wherever pictures play a decisive role. Mobile photography does have its advantages and disadvantages. It is now up to you to decide whether smartphone photography is ideal for you or not.
Memoir (Written by Akbar)
Every second is of infinite value
My most unforgettable trip occurred about two years ago when my family and I went to Bandung during the summer vacation. It was our last holiday before the global pandemic hit Indonesia. Going to Bandung is a trip once in 2 years; we'll spend two weeks of our fasting month with my mother's family there. It was May when the fasting month started, which means it was the dry season. Summer in Indonesia is considered the best period of the year for any holiday. Especially in Bandung, a city with mind-blowing places and a place that never makes you bored. Its sophistication makes Bandung was called "Paris of Java" and became a famous term among European tourists.
Bandung is on Java Island with 1.382,9 km away from Pekanbaru. So, my family and I should take a 2-hour flight from Pekanbaru to Bandung international airport. The journey from where our house is to Pekanbaru's airport was about one and a half-hour. As we arrive at the airport, my mom bought souvenirs for my relatives there. At the same time, I am a bit emotional and enthusiastic about being on the plane as soon as possible. Playing games with my relatives, visiting stunning places keeps my mind to become even more excited! We then went to the plane and took off at 8.00 a.m.
After two hours up in the air, we landed safely in Husein Sastranegara International Airport. A 2-year separation from Bandung brought me to tears. I cried in my heart due to the happiness of arriving at my 2nd home Bandung. As I stepped off the plane, I can't stop imagining the fun things we'll do soon. We were welcomed with a pleasant sunny day in Bandung. Soon, we met my auntie which will bring us to grandpa's and grandma's house. We stayed for 15 minutes, and we went down to the parking lot. Happy to know our bags fit nicely in my auntie's car luggage!
On Saturday, we all went on our first trip with Bandung's big family. We were given many options of tourist attractions and decided to go to PVJ Mall and Gedung Sate. These places are what tourists will surely put on their top list if they were in Bandung. PVJ is a high-class mall that provides varieties of products and food. Gedung Sate is famous considering the historical aspect of Indonesia. We arrived at PVJ Mall, spent three hours there. I understood the reason why the city is called Paris of Java; the mall was fancy. We explored each corner of the mall with amazement; we didn't think it was this fancy. Gucci, Luis Vuitton, Chanel, looking magnificent there. We finally went to Gedung Sate after. The road trip adds the overall enjoyment, visiting places were lovely, but the road trip was fantastic. We played games and told funny stories, and this kind of interaction with them never fails to make me miss Bandung.
At last, after two weeks, my family and I went back to Kerinci. On the 29th of May, we arrived at our home. I remembered our last night in Bandung, all my relatives came to grandpa's house, and we all ordered nasi goreng from the street food cart. Sitting together, made a little bit more memory, and enjoy the remaining hours before departure. I thought to myself "Wow, I can't wait to go here again in 2 years" when I am still there. It was never in my mind, thinking it was the last holiday before the global pandemic hit Indonesia. I learned how we must value every moment in our life because we don't know possibilities in the future. At least, I'm delighted to see that I spent Bandung's Holiday well!
I was six at that time when I dreamed of finding a discovery on something. I think it was every 6-year-old’s dream to have an innovation. Having innovation that can make the world even more colourful. However, I remembered my dream after listening to the teachings of Mr Alex. He was our grade 12 technology, subject teacher. He is also known as the wise guy. Mr Alex was wise; he gave so many motivations for us to channel our ideas and finally made an innovation. I was one of the students that liked his teachings. That time he taught us deeper about innovations that shocked the world. Not only I managed to understand his teaching about that. But I also had the feeling to make myself on the list of people who positively impacted the world by making their innovations. In addition, my family was supportive, including financially. I didn’t think we were poor. So, it was a big chance for me to reach my dream.
A week after Mr Alex’s first meeting of the innovation chapter, I joined a seminar. Our local city technology organization held this event. They aimed to increase the student's enthusiasm for innovation, especially in technology. They use the money from the sale of seminar tickets to become capital for the innovation that they have planned.
Their innovations have been useful for the city we were living in, London. Even some innovations were supported directly by the local government. Seeing the potential of the organization. I came to the seminar. But before I went there, I started my day with cereal. My bowl was always full. I came there with great enthusiasm, and my mind was also full of questions.
I can’t deny the seminar was helpful. It opened my mind even more about innovation, especially in technology. My desire to reach my dream was clearer. There was a small group of committees at the exit gate of the seminar room. I could not resist my urge to join that organization. So, I decided to tell them I’m interested in joining London’s technology organization. They welcomed me and told me several procedures to join. I felt really happy and couldn’t wait to channel my ideas.
I went to a warm, clean London city garden with my sister. I came here to find an overview of my innovation. I thought it was time for me to start contributing to technology. My sister roamed around the garden. She quietly plucked a small bag of plums. Even though it was forbidden to do that. I immediately focused on the plums. My mind was thinking hard to make an innovation related to plums. I got the golden idea of making a printer that can make an image touchable like plums. I suddenly came up with the name “3D printer”. I rushed home and put all my ideas on a piece of paper.
They spent several days wondering if I was eligible for financial assistance. On that day, they promised to inform the result of their consideration. They suddenly asked me to go back to the building. I was really worried that my request would be rejected. However, as soon I arrived at the chairman's room, I was shocked! There was the governor of our city. He was also there to tell the good news. The organization told the local government my plan to make a “3D printing” discovery. It turns out that my plan was satisfying. I cried loudly, full of joy. Not only getting financial support to continue my discovery, I also got a scholarship for my university. I came home while imagining my family’s reaction. Indeed, they were really happy.
It's true what People said, “strongest wind cannot be seen”. I managed to identify my desire and become someone tough.
