If you want a complete digital audio workstation to produce music from scratch, choose Image Line FL Studio 20; if you need high-fidelity home listening with an open, natural soundstage, choose GRADO Classic Series SR80. These two products occupy entirely different worlds: one is a powerful software suite designed for creation and recording, while the other is a specialized piece of hardware built solely for passive, immersive playback in a quiet room. Confusing them is easy if you only glance at the category headers, but looking closer reveals they serve completely distinct purposes. You cannot use FL Studio to listen to your favorite album in the way a dedicated headphone does, nor can you use the SR80 to compose a symphony or mix a track without additional software.
The real decision comes down to intent. Are you looking to build a studio, record vocals, and craft beats using advanced MIDI tools? Or are you a listener who wants to hear the subtle nuances of a recording, enjoy instrument separation, and have headphones that feel light enough for hours of sitting on a couch? The answer dictates which path you take. This comparison cuts through the noise to help you decide based on what each product actually delivers according to its design specifications.
• Image Line FL Studio 20: Its biggest strength is the all-in-one production capability with over 80 plugins and a top-tier piano roll editor for complex sequencing; its trade-off is that it is software requiring a computer, not a standalone listening device.
• GRADO Classic Series SR80: Its biggest strength is the refined open-back acoustic design that offers a spacious, natural soundstage with exceptional clarity for home use; its trade-off is that it is wired only and lacks any active features like battery life or noise isolation.
• Who this is for: FL Studio 20 is for aspiring producers and composers ready to create; the SR80 is for audiophiles seeking detailed, engaging music reproduction in a stationary setting.
FL Studio 20 represents a comprehensive ecosystem for anyone serious about audio production. This isn't just a simple tool; it is a full Producer Edition bundle that includes the core software alongside essential peripherals like closed-back monitoring headphones and a USB hub. The heart of this system lies in its ability to handle multi-track audio recording and MIDI editing with a level of precision that has made its Piano Roll Editor famous in the industry. If you are passionate about creating music across various styles, this package gives you immediate access to over 80 instrument and effect plugins. These tools cover everything from synthesis and sample manipulation to compression, reverb, distortion, and equalization filtering.
This product is ideal for the bedroom producer or the professional composer who needs a unified workflow. Because it supports both Windows and macOS, it fits seamlessly into most modern setups. The inclusion of the closed-back monitoring headphones in the bundle is a strategic move for beginners; these headphones are designed to isolate sound, which is crucial when you are trying to catch every detail in a mix without external interference. However, this is not a product for casual listening. The entire experience revolves around input, processing, and outputting data to create something new. You cannot simply plug this in and sit back to enjoy a concert; you must be actively engaged in the creative process.

You should skip FL Studio 20 if your primary goal is simply to consume content. While the bundled headphones allow you to hear what you make, the software itself requires a laptop or personal computer to function. It is a demanding application that requires you to learn the interface, manage tracks, and understand the signal flow. If you do not intend to record, sequence, or edit audio, this investment is unnecessary. Furthermore, the "closed-back" nature of the included headphones means they will not provide the airy, open soundstage found in dedicated hi-fi equipment; they are tools for focus, not relaxation.
The GRADO Classic Series SR80 is a masterpiece of analog audio engineering, designed specifically for the home listening environment. Unlike the software-heavy FL Studio, the SR80 is a purely physical experience rooted in decades of craftsmanship by a family-owned American brand. Its defining characteristic is the open-back design, which allows sound to breathe freely. This construction creates a spacious and natural listening experience that many listeners find impossible to replicate with sealed or closed-back models. The result is improved instrument separation and a level of detail that brings the music forward with energy and immediacy.
This headphone is perfect for the listener who values authenticity above all else. The dynamic drivers deliver a frequency range of 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz, ensuring that you hear the full spectrum of your music, from the deepest bass to the highest highs. The lightweight build is a significant factor here; the headband and earpiece materials are engineered for comfort during extended sessions. Whether you are studying, working, or just relaxing, the SR80 stays comfortable without feeling heavy or clamping too tightly. The sound signature is lively and engaging, known for clear vocals and a presentation that feels alive rather than flat or processed.
However, the SR80 is not a portable companion. It relies entirely on a wired connection via a 3.5mm mini jack with a 1/4" adapter, meaning you are tethered to your source device. There is no battery, no wireless connectivity, and no active noise cancellation. In fact, the open-back design means there is zero noise isolation; sound leaks out, and outside noise leaks in. This makes it unsuitable for commuting, exercising, or noisy environments. It is strictly optimized for a controlled, quiet space where you can appreciate the full depth of the soundstage. If you are looking for a "best sweatproof kids headset for running" or any mobile solution, this is not the answer. It is a stationary anchor for your audio journey.
• Best for creative control → Image Line FL Studio 20: If you need to record, sequence, and manipulate audio, this is the only viable option.
• Best for passive listening quality → GRADO Classic Series SR80: If your goal is to hear music exactly as the artist intended with maximum spatial awareness, the SR80 wins.
• Portability and mobility → Neither: FL Studio requires a computer, and the SR80 is wired and non-isolating; neither is suitable for activities like running or travel.
• Ease of setup for beginners → Image Line FL Studio 20: The bundle includes necessary peripherals (headphones, hub) to get started immediately on a PC or Mac.
• Comfort for long sessions → GRADO Classic Series SR80: The lightweight construction and ergonomic fit are specifically praised for extended wear without fatigue.
• Sound isolation needs → Image Line FL Studio 20: The included closed-back headphones block external noise, unlike the open-back SR80 which lets sound escape.
• Value for creators → Image Line FL Studio 20: You get a full DAW, 80+ plugins, and hardware in one package, offering immense utility for production work.
• Value for audiophiles → GRADO Classic Series SR80: You get a refined, handcrafted listening experience that prioritizes sonic purity over features.
In my opinion, if I were buying for myself today, I would choose the Image Line FL Studio 20 bundle because it unlocks the ability to create rather than just consume. The sheer breadth of tools provided—from the industry-standard piano roll to the massive library of plugins—makes it an incredible value for anyone wanting to enter the world of music production. The SR80 is undeniably beautiful for home listening, but it is a single-purpose device. Unless you already own a fully equipped studio and only need a new pair of reference headphones, the FL Studio 20 offers a much broader scope of utility. That said, for those who never plan to touch a keyboard or mouse and simply want to enjoy their vinyl or streaming collection in the best possible way, the Grado SR80 remains a top-tier choice for stationary enjoyment.

Yes, the Producer Edition bundle explicitly includes closed-back monitoring headphones, a 4-port USB 3.0 hub, and the software itself, so you have the essential components to begin producing right away.
Yes, the included closed-back headphones are designed to isolate sound, which helps you focus on your mix without distractions, unlike the open-back design of the GRADO SR80.
The SR80 uses a standard 3.5mm mini jack with a 1/4" adapter included, so it connects easily to most computers, audio interfaces, and home stereo systems without needing a dedicated amplifier for basic use.
