What is Underwater Hockey?

Welcome to the fast-paced, adrenaline-packed world of underwater hockey! You’ve probably never heard of it (we wonder why, it’s such an awesome sport), so let us give you an overview of how the game works.

The players: The sport is co-ed, and is played by people of all different ages and varying experience levels. There are 6 players on each team in the water, with more players on the sides as subs.

The equipment: Players are equipped with a mask & snorkel, a glove, a stick, and fins to propel them in the water. Remember, we provide all the equipment you need to play - just bring your swimsuit and towel!

The playing field: Underwater hockey is played, of course, at the bottom of a pool, usually 6-8 ft. deep. There are goals at either end of the pool.

The game: The game play in theory is simple - work together as a team to try to get the puck into your opponent’s goal! Achieve this by learning how to cycle with your teammates, passing the puck, and using strategy to outmaneuver the other team.

How does U of I fit into this?

Here at the University of Illinois, we play Underwater Hockey at the Activities and Recreation Center (ARC) indoor pool's north lanes! Please see the Calendar page of this website for current practice times. We also hold social events roughly every other week, such as social swimming activities at CRCE or team dinners!

Additionally, we attend tournaments with other UWH teams once or twice every semester! Past tournament locations have included:
Michigan State University
Chicago
Milwaukee
Door County
Marinette
Minneapolis
Denver
Toronto
Los Angeles
Atlanta
George Mason University
San Jose State University
Hawaii
Sometimes, we even host tournaments of our own right here in Champaign!

Our team is well-regarded among the UWH community in both the Midwest and United States as a whole for being both a great club for first-time players as well as a producer of National and World-level players! More importantly, our team is a place where you will make friends for a lifetime. We can't wait to see you there with us!

The team is officially recognized by the Underwater Society of America, underwater hockey's governing body.
We are also proud to partner with our unofficial "sister clubs" of Chicago and Michigan State University, with whom we share decades of close ties and cooperation.
