The Illinois State Police is comprised of a dedicated team of sworn Troopers and professional civilian staff who serve with honor and distinction.

The majority of our sworn officers are assigned to Patrol Operations, which provide frontline enforcement of traffic laws, respond to emergency incidents, and support local law enforcement agencies throughout Illinois. These officers play a critical role in ensuring public safety on our state’s highways and in our communities.

In addition to Patrol, the Illinois State Police operates numerous specialized divisions. Our Division of Internal Investigation and Human Resources is responsible for recruiting and hiring qualified Troopers and civilian employees, overseeing personnel matters, managing compensation and benefits, and supporting programs for employee wellness, mental health, and diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Our Division of Criminal Investigation is focused on major crime investigations, including homicides, narcotics, cybercrime, child exploitation, public corruption, and organized crime. This division also plays a leading role in intelligence gathering, criminal analysis, and coordination with federal and local law enforcement partners.

The Division of Public Information and Safety Education ensures that our communities are informed and engaged. This team is responsible for developing communications strategies, handling media relations, and disseminating critical information during emergencies or public safety events. They also work to strengthen community partnerships and promote transparency and trust between law enforcement and the public.

Other specialized units within the Illinois State Police include the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team, Crime Scene Services, Air Operations, Canine Units, and the Protective Services Unit, which safeguards elected officials and state facilities.
