The Illinois Affiliate of the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (ILAFCS) Teacher of the Year (TOY) Award identifies and recognizes exemplary teachers with outstanding educational programs that utilize methods, techniques and activities integrated into the curriculum that provide the stimulus for and give visibility to family and consumer sciences elementary and secondary education.

Karen L. Doehring was truly a professional in the field of Family and Consumer Sciences. In the few years before her sudden death at age 28, Karen had already been a model for her fellow professionals. Her willingness to promote the profession was shown by her service on boards and conference committees and her involvement with the meetings of several Family and Consumer Sciences related organizations to which she belonged. Karen was constantly growing professionally and encouraged others to do the same.
