RMS - Sales Summary ๐
B2B business case study | Year 2023
Product designer: Ikshat
Platform: Web (react)
*RMS stands for Restaurant Management System
Foodics (a B2B company), MENA's region-leading restaurant and payment tech provider, is a one-stop-shop restaurant management ecosystem that enables restaurateurs to effortlessly control, streamline, and grow all their operations, anytime and from anywhere.
Whether itโs a cloud kitchen, a dine-in restaurant, a local bakery, a food truck, a quick service restaurant, a franchise, or a large-scale restaurant chain, Foodics is for all.
Overview / Why do we need to improve ๐คจ
A sales summary is an overview, where the users can get a holistic overview in seconds and can seamlessly access related detailed reports to make smarter business decisions in less time.
Based on the Mixpanel analytics data, the highest page visits and exports happen for the sales reports only.
Understanding the problem ๐คท๐ปโโ๏ธ
Currently, users need to export and download each report and manually compare them to understand the overall sales trend of the different areas of the business, which consumes a lot of time.
No overall summary is available for the major sales metrics to get a holistic understanding.
Poor navigation to access all the sales reports.
Reports are not comparable to other sales reports.
Limited graphical representation to only one graph type and default graphs are hidden.
Super long table data with no pagination is provided.
Users cannot save and export their customized report

Status Quo ๐
Currently, users can view the highlights of their business sales only on the dashboard page.
The dashboard is limited to only a few sales metrics.
To get deeper insights, the users navigate to the Sales reports pages.
Around 20+ sales reports are provided in a default table format.
Some of the reports have bar-graph views for visual representations.

Working together ๐ค
Conducted multiple workshops with business stakeholders (PM, Devs, VP & Design Manager) to come together and think through the problem and brainstorm ideas and prioritize them.
This helped to understand the issues better from both technical and usability perspectives and created a stronger bond between the team members to work together on this big project.
Top analysis of competitors review ๐
In order to know how sales summary works, looked into some of the direct/indirect competitors to understand the structure of the summaries, ways to represent data, and some key sales metrics which are critical for a restaurant/food business.

MVP / Primary objective โณ๏ธ
To kickstart this major project, I conducted a workshop with business stakeholders to prioritize the features based on the famous Moscow method i.e. Impact vs Efforts. As a result, we figured out some quick wins which are high impact value but low effort.
Utilizing the current graphs styles from the dashboard
Having advanced filters and searchable reports
Saving and sharing the summary and individual sales reports
Create your own summary board and provide further customization.
Quick export options from the graph widgets
Providing top sales 10 reports to choose from to create their summary boards
Choosing any sales summary board from the saved list and view them anytime
Brainstorming design ideas ๐ก
Tried multiple ideas to create a solution that is consistent with the current RMS software design guidelines and get it reviewed by the other designers & developers for tech feasibility check to keep it in reality.
Low-fidelity sketches โ๐ผ
After the team reviews, created the final version of the wireframes designs and validated the workflow from the internal teams which work closer to the users like the customer success team and also the UX research team interviews the users regularly.
Concept testing โ๏ธ
Based on the feedback on the final designs, created the high-fidelity designs in Figma and wanted to test the usability of the features with the users.ย
Before that, we conducted 3 pilot tests with internal teams (Sales team, customer success, and customer support team) who are working closely with the users to improve the overall test setup.
RESEARCH OBJECTIVES
To validate the usability of the new Sales summary features, navigation, and usage of details reports with advanced filters.
Validating the text copy of the buttons, page titles, and charts is clear and understandable.
RESEARCH METHODS
Moderated remote usability testing with Foodics internal teams (at least 4 participants) via google hangouts by providing a few tasks to perform using Figma prototypes.
Capturing their feedback after every task and getting overall feedback at the end of the session.
Unmoderated usability testing via usertesting.com, sending 4 tasks created using Figma prototypes to two groups consisting of 5 participants in each group.
Collecting feedback after every task and overall feedback at the end.
Figma designs and prototypes ๐ป
Created 4 different tasks for the users to perform the unmoderated usability test remotely.
The test setup and pilot test ๐งช
Conducting user research with Foodics internal teams who are working closely with clients and focusing on regular business sales.
On the UserTesting platform, we have conducted the unmoderated test with their audience that has worked in the hotel & restaurant industry, handling the sales, finance, and marketing of the business, and belonging to any location but preferably the Middle East.
Setting up multiple click-through prototype tasks to perform by the users to validate the navigation, page structure, content, and components.
Asking the feedback after every task completion to understand the complexity and suggestions for improvement.
