Lessons from Japan's lost decades for the world
To advance development in Japan and Asia through research and deeper understanding.
Japan is showing signs of economic recovery. The country has moved on from its zero-interest rate policy and prolonged deflation to a resumption of real wage growth. Japan appears finally to have put the "Lost Decades" behind it.
However, critical structural challenges remain, such as addressing an aging and shrinking population, enhancing labor market mobility, and ensuring the sustainability of social security systems.
As signs of “Japanification” emerge in the Chinese economy, China and other Asian economies are confronting challenges that Japan already faced in the past few decades.
These illustrate the limitations of the export-driven growth model based on high savings and investment. New approaches to sustainable development are called for.
JGE aims to serve as a leading research platform for the study of Japan’s economic experience and its implications for Asia and beyond.
We bring together scholars from Waseda University with international researchers to generate insights into sustainable growth strategies in the face of pressing global challenges: from shifting demographics to the AI revolution, climate change and geopolitical instability.
We strive to advance academic inquiry into Japan and Asia's role in the global economy through international conferences, seminars, workshops, and collaborative research.
We aim to foster dialogue among policymakers, business leaders, and scholars by disseminating our findings through public lectures, industry engagements, and partnerships with universities and research institutions.
We aspire to contribute to the development of innovative economic policies and strategies that promote long-term prosperity in Japan, Asia, and the global economy by facilitating interdisciplinary research and knowledge exchange.
