Profile

Dr. Souptick Chanda obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering at IIEST Shibpur, India in the year of 2003. He completed his Master’s degree in the same discipline from Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, India in 2006. Thereafter, during the span of 2006 to 2012, he had worked for two prominent corporate sectors and gathered hands-on experience in CAD Modelling, Analysis and Product Lifecycle Management. His doctoral study in the field of Biomechanics at Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, India, lasted until August, 2015. Subsequently, he joined NTU Singapore as a post-doctoral research fellow and worked on virtual deformation modelling of human pelvic anatomy during digital rectal examinations training. Dr. Chanda is presently working as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biosciences and Bioengineering at Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, India. His areas of research interest include Biomechanics, implant design and optimization, surgical simulations and soft computing.

Academic Experience:

  • Assistant Professor at Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, from May 2017 till date.
  • Post-doctoral Research Fellow at Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, Nanyang Technological University Singapore, from July 2016 till May 2017.
  • Assistant Professor at Techno India University, Kolkata, from October 2015 till June 2016.

Industry Exposure:

I worked for two reputed private sectors from Nov, 2006 till Jan, 2012, as Systems Engineer – Engineering & Industrial Services. During this time span, I have been primarily involved in two major projects:

1) Client Name: Boeing

Project: Boeing 787

Work Area: As a team member, I was involved in part design, part modeling of various interior parts of Boeing’s flight model no. Boeing-787. The design encompassed modeling and structural analysis using tools e.g. CATIA, ENOVIA, ANSYS.

2) Client Name: General Electric

Project: GE Wind Turbine

Work Area: As a team lead, I was involved in working in-line with the customer requirement of necessary drafting changes of various Wind Turbine parts and thereafter, carrying out Product Lifecycle Management using Unigraphics and Newton Suite’s Applications (a GE specific PLM tool).

Achievements:

• Topped in my district in the secondary examination and state-wise ranked 41 and awarded National Merit Scholarship in the year of 1997.

• Awarded Institute Scholarship for Master’s degree in Technology at IIT Guwahati, Assam.

• Awarded Institute Scholarship for doctoral thesis at IIT Kharagpur, West Bengal.

• Appointed Visiting Scholar at University of Southampton, UK in June 2013 for a duration of seven weeks.

• Invited for a Podium talk at the prestigious 7th World Congress of Biomechanics, July 2014, Boston, USA.

Workshops and seminars conducted:

  • A one-day workshop on "Computational Modeling and Simulation in Bioengineering Applications" in the Department of BSBE, IIT Guwahati, June 9, 2018.
