The year 2025 marks a Jubilee year for the Catholic Church, with over 30 million pilgrims expected to visit Rome over the year. The Jubilee offers a unique lens through which to examine the governance and urban planning strategies undertaken to prepare for this major event. This tour provides insight into the historical and contemporary processes that have shaped some of the most iconic sites in Vatican City. The itinerary begins with an exploration of the history of urban redevelopment that has, for centuries, centered on St. Peter's Basilica, the Borgo district, and the Via della Conciliazione — an axis symbolically linking the city of Rome with the Vatican, both recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Through the integration of geo-historical, architectural, and urban planning perspectives, as well as cartographic analysis, participants will gain a deeper understanding of the transformative processes that have defined these spaces. The tour also includes opportunities to engage with key stakeholders involved in the recent redevelopment projects, highlighting the ongoing evolution and complexity of this iconic area of Rome.
