Over 60 Idahoans turned out to participate in a conversation with the single goal of identifying what needs to change in Idaho politics and how we can create a people-powered movement to create it. During the 2 hour facilitated discussion participants engaged with each other to generate ideas about how we can move Idaho forward.
The first topic of the evening focused on defining the challenges our movement will face. Groups worked together to capture the key issues that stand in the way of real change and serve to protect the status quo.
The challenges of making inroads in a state dominated by a single party
Lack of understanding and education on state and local issues
Voter turn out, education, and access (primary process, etc)
The second topic we discussed was how we overcome challenges to create a grassroots movement that can bring progressive change.
Listening to each other to build trust and understanding
Focus on issue-based engagement in our communities
Improve collaboration between progressive organizations
Find ways to keep attention on our legislators and hold them accountable
The groups took some time to generate a summary of their discussions before presenting to each other. After all groups finished their presentation leaders took turns adding their unique perspectives and sharing each groups' conversations.
A second event will be held December 12th from 6:30pm to 8:30pm at Boise State University Student Union Building. The goal of this event will be to create and review rough draft prototypes for strategies to bring our ideas into reality. The outcome will be the selection of prototypes which will be further refined by self-organizing teams for a goal setting discussion after the new year. You can find out more about the second event on its Facebook page, with more information and ideas provided below to prepare for our next event.
Each participant at our first gathering was invited to write down a goal for themselves that they could achieve in the next two weeks to help support our shared goal of furthering progressive causes in Idaho. The list is truly inspiring. Take a look at what people are working on right now.
Come join us and others in the next phase of our forward movement. We'll be meeting once again in the Boise State Student Union Building on December 12th from 6:30pm to 8:30pm. Find out more about this event by visiting the event page on Facebook.
Check out the ideas participants generated during our first brainstorming event. Pick one or more you can get behind. Don't see your idea on the list? That's OK! New ideas are welcome whenever they appear. Feel free to start fresh.
Create a prototype that shows us how people can join together to carry the idea forward. Draw up a storyboard, make a video, or build something quick and dirty to get your idea into physical space where we can see it and talk about it.
Post a picture or video of your prototype to the event Facebook page so others can get inspired and provide feedback.
