Getting to Ortigia (Siracusa)
From Catania Fontanarossa Airport (CTA) — approx. 65 km
By coach (recommended, ~1 hour 10 minutes)
Direct coaches operated by Interbus run frequently from Catania Airport to Siracusa – Corso Gelone 50. From the coach stop, Ortigia can be reached by taxi or in approximately 20 minutes on foot. Tickets and updated timetables are available at interbus.it.
By car (~50–60 minutes)
From the airport, follow the E45/SS114 towards Siracusa and then follow signs for Siracusa/Ortigia. Please note that much of Ortigia is a restricted traffic zone (Zona a Traffico Limitato, ZTL). Visitors arriving by car are advised to use one of the car parks near the entrance to the island, such as Molo Sant’Antonio or Talete, and continue on foot.
By train (~1 hour 30 minutes, including transfers)
A free shuttle connects the airport terminals with Catania Aeroporto Fontanarossa railway station. From there, regional trains run to Siracusa railway station. Ortigia is approximately a 20-minute walk from the station and can also be reached by taxi. Tickets and timetables are available at trenitalia.com.
From Palermo Falcone–Borsellino Airport (PMO) — approx. 290 km
By car (~3 hours 15 minutes–3 hours 30 minutes)
Take the A29 motorway towards Palermo, then the A19 towards Catania. From Catania, continue along the E45/SS114 towards Siracusa and follow signs for Ortigia. As access to much of Ortigia is restricted, visitors should park near the entrance to the island, for example at Molo Sant’Antonio or Talete.
By train (~5 hours 30 minutes–6 hours 30 minutes)
Take a train from Palermo Airport to Palermo Centrale (approximately 50–60 minutes). From Palermo Centrale, continue to Siracusa, usually changing trains in or near Catania. The Palermo–Siracusa leg takes approximately 4–4.5 hours, depending on the connection. From Siracusa railway station, Ortigia is approximately a 20-minute walk or a short taxi ride away. Tickets and updated timetables are available at trenitalia.com.
Please note: Participants travelling by air are strongly advised to fly to Catania Fontanarossa Airport, which offers much faster and more convenient connections to Siracusa and Ortigia.
