We Won; They Lost; Intergroup Logics at the Core of Sports Communication Research
Competitive sports are built on contrasts: favorite/underdog, hero/villian, us/them. It is then unsurprising that the most applied communication theories in sport communication are built from notions of in-groups and out-groups: the teams, players and nations we root for and the teams, players, and nations seeking to thwart this joy. This invited keynote will focus on the various intergroup dynamics that shape sports communication theories and practice, whether those divisions are formed demographically or through more organic means. Moreover, the keynote will focus on how these elements shift via the fusion of globalization as well as the fall of mass communication, where broad casting does not typically result in broad receiving.
