‘If you make substitutions like that, you lose’

Peter Schmeichel gave a warning to coach Erik ten Haag.

Manchester United lost 1-3 to Manchester City in the 27th round of the 2023-24 Premier League (PL) season held at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester, England at 0:30 a.m. on the 4th (Korean time). As a result, Manchester City, which added a point, remained in second place with 62 points, and Manchester United remained in sixth place with 44 points.

Schmeichel is Manchester United's legendary goalkeeper. He was the starting goalkeeper when Manchester United dramatically won the UEFA Champions League final in the 1998-99 season and achieved a treble. Schmeichel played 395 games for Manchester United, keeping 180 clean sheets.

Schmeichel did not agree with coach Ten Haag's replacement of players. He started by saying, "As the game progressed, Manchester United fell too far. If it were me, I would have pushed a little harder. When the score was tied, Manchester United should have made a substitution."

He then said, "Is it right to remove an excellent player from the midfield who maintains mobility and is responsible for developing the ball? Should we have removed the defender who was in the best form? I don't understand. Should he rest for the next game?" said coach Ten Haag. He left a harsh review on the replacement.

Coach Ten Haag used four replacement cards. In the 24th minute of the second half, he replaced Johnny Evans and brought in youth Willie Kambwala. Schmeichel questioned this replacement. Although he gave up the equalizer to Phil Foden, Evans did well in blocking Manchester City's onslaught. There was also a scene where Manchester United was saved by skilled defense. In fact, Evans received the highest rating of 7.1 among defensive players according to 'Fotmob', a media outlet specializing in soccer statistics.

Coach Ten Haag later replaced Marcus Rashford and brought in Anthony, and took out Kobe Mainu and Alejandro Garnacho just before the end of the game. Sofian Amrabat and Omari Pawson were brought into the field.

Sure enough, Amrabat, brought in by coach Ten Haag, made a fatal mistake and allowed Manchester City's third goal. Due to unstable ball handling in the defensive zone, possession of the ball was lost, and a one-on-one chance went to Erling Haaland. There was no way Holland could have missed this, and in the end, Manchester United lost its last will to chase.
