The Women of the Philippine Independent Church is the most active and visible lay sector organization in the I.F.I. It has been the most organized sector in the parish, diocesan, regional and national levels.
A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE
WOMEN OF THE PHILIPPINE INDEPENDENT CHURCH
In 1955, Obispo Maximo Isabelo de los Reyes, Jr. was guest speaker at the Triennial Convention of the Episcopal Church in Honolulu. He observed the work of their women and realized the important role they play in the life of the church. He felt the need to organize the women of the Iglesia Filipina Independiente in the parish, diocesan and national levels.
On April, 1956, Bishop de los Reyes Jr., called a meeting of 26 women from Laguna, Ilocos Norte, Rizal, Cavite, Quezon City, Manila, Cagayan de Oro and Pangasinan. They were briefed on the work of the Episcopalian women through lectures and moving pictures. These inspired the women and they decided to elect officers to lay down the ground work. Mrs. Antonia Rubio was elected president and the organization was named Women’s Auxiliary (W.A.). However, due to advanced age and failing health of Mrs. Rubio and the lack of experience and pressure of work among the officers this group met a natural death.
This prompted Bishop de los Reyes, Jr. to call another meeting on August 25, 1956 which was attended by 226 women from different dioceses. With the help of Fr. Jose Montenegro, Bishop Dionisio Vilches together with Ella Cabreza who had earlier prepared the guidelines of the W.A., the duties and work of the women were clarified. Officers were elected on the national level to organize the W.A. in the parish and diocesan levels. Miss Ella Cabreza was elected national president.
On Feb. 12, 1957, the Constitution of the W.A. was finalized and on May 10-11, 1957, the first National Convention of the W.A. was held at the St. Andrew’s Theological Seminary. This convention ratified the constitution and voted the Thank Offering as the means of raising funds. Thank Offering boxes were printed and distributed to all women with the help of some diocesan bishops.
At the 10th Biennial Convention of the W.A., the constitution was amended. It changed the name Women’s Auxiliary to Women of the Philippine Independent Church (WOPIC) because the women believed they are part of the church and not merely auxiliaries or helpers. It also fixed the tenure of officers to three consecutive terms and divided the country into four regions. Region I covers the provinces from Tarlac to the North; Region II from Zambales and Pampanga down to the Bicol Regions; Region III the whole of Visayas and Region IV the whole Mindanao. At the 1979 convention, Romblon made a request to be a part of Region II due to its proximity and access to transportation.
From thereon, the Women of the Philippine Independent Church has been the most active and visible lay sector organization in the I.F.I. It has been the most organized sector in the parish, diocesan, regional and national levels.
On April 29 – May 1, 2016 the 60th Foundation Anniversary of WOPIC was celebrated in Tagaytay City with the theme “Women as Co-Stewards in Promoting Human and Ecological Balance for All His creations”. The event was attended by more than 500 women nationwide with guests Bishops and Priests
