In 2016, the United Nations provided a policy framework for global action by unanimously adopting the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Online Learning Consortium's Institute of Emerging Leadership in Higher Education, in response in 2020, created a Global Leadership Development program to bring actors together from across the globe around the goals. In October 2022 our group of four activists from the 2022 cohort, came together to promote the relationship among peaceful and inclusive societies, health and well-being, and quality education to amplify the identified inequities in educational technology integration in digital learning. The podcast series Cast A Light emerged as an option for dialogic engagement, strategic transformation, and knowledge transfer. We have seen the inextricable links between inequities in society and challenges to economic growth and sustainability. The series, therefore, offers a practical and affordable way for the average person to participate in the UN's vision of a more sustainable, inclusive, and prosperous future by addressing four of the 2030 Goals that closely intersect in the higher education milieu!
The global pandemic acted as an accelerator that identified the glaring inequities in technology access and adoption in Higher Education across the globe. We are proud to share that by working together we are igniting a fire and casting a light. Today we are taking the first step in identifying the existing gaps through our podcast series. Join us in sharing your story and help us to make a more significant impact in our world by joining local community activities that are collectively making a global difference one voice at a time. The goals that will drive the effort are enumerated below:
Provide a resource for change
Provide a framework for institutions to examine their digital access at an institutional, faculty, and student level
Provide strategies for institutions to open their digital access based on best practices and research
Extend the podcast beyond one season for continued examination and implementation through change work
Continuing Phase 1
As of December 2, 2022, the goal of the group is to share the published website and related assets with the IELOL Global community by December 2, 2022. It is our goal to obtain 50% more actors (2 new people) through a call to action for the IELOL global Fall 2022 community and personal networks to join the conversation as potential guests on the podcast series. Complete and publish two episodes for season 1 by January 31, 2023. We have created a collector to connect new listeners and to send out new episodes to our audience according to the cadence of our podcast. We are working on increasing the social media presence of the podcast and advertising on website/podcast pages. Pages will include LinkedIn, Facebook, and Instagram with the option to add a Twitter account if the environment is favorable.
Projections for Phase 2
The group aims to continue the work by increasing the community on the website in the first three months of 2023. We aim to work on implementing a strategic podcast creation plan with episodes that can reach a wider target and improve advocacy around inequities in digital learning by January 31, 2023. The road map for phase 2 is below:
Create complete drafts for season transcripts (a minimum of four episodes per season) based on the agreed-upon scope by March 31, 2023
Create episodes for all four seasons for launching based on the implementation plan by July 31, 2023
Launch Episodes Bi-Weekly
Share Podcast with a purpose at the OLC Innovate conference in Spring 2023
Projections for Phase 3
Looking ahead and based on the success of the previous phases CAST A LIGHT will focus on connecting with global players who can help to guard and maintain the efforts of social and economic improvements in the project locations while increasing the reach of the project. The group is committed to raising awareness and aims to improve technology access literacy thru the following opportunities:
Create a Flipbook of podcast transcripts for use with a global audience with options for translating into different languages by March 30, 2023.
Develop and implement website maintenance and course creation plan for an open access MOOC or other OER.
